PREVIEW: Lobos host McMurry for 91st edition of the Battle of I-20

Sul Ross returns to Jackson Field for homecoming

The 91st edition of the Battle of Interstate-20 takes place Saturday, Oct. 29 at Jackson Field.

It's not only a rivalry game, but it's also homecoming for the Sul Ross State football program.

>> HEAD TO HEAD: McMurry is 47-42-2 all-time against Sul Ross since the series began on Nov. 17, 1923.

McMurry won the first meeting, 12-0. Both schools met off and on from 1923-1946 before the series went on a 44-year hiatus.

The rivalry was renewed in 1990 and continued until 2011. McMurry then made the jump to the NCAA Division II level, which put the rivalry on hold.

McMurry later rejoined the NCAA Division III level, which reignited the rivalry with Sul Ross in 2015.

The series has shifted back and forth. The War Hawks won three meetings in a row from 1998-2000 before the Lobos won three in a row from 2006-2008.

McMurry then won three straight games over the Lobos from 2009-2011. Sul Ross then won the next three meetings from 2015-2017.

Last year the rivalry took place twice. McMurry won 17-14 during the condensed spring season where the game was played in February.

Sul Ross then captured a 24-11 victory last fall on the road in Abilene.

>> FIELDHOUSE DEDICATION: Right before kickoff at 12:30 p.m. on the 50-yard line, the fieldhouse is being dedicated in memory of Randy Jackson.

Jackson passed away on Dec. 21, 2021. He was a big supporter of Sul Ross and a former booster for Lobo athletics.

>> HOMECOMING: Since 2011, the Lobos are 5-5 on homecoming. Sul Ross hasn't won a homecoming game since Oct. 20, 2018, when it edged out Howard Payne, 28-27.

>> THE WAR HAWKS: McMurry dropped its first six games of the season before narrowly defeating Austin College, 24-21.

Last week, the War Hawks lost to Texas Lutheran, 17-10. McMurry had 269 total yards of offense.

Quarterback Andrew McBride has completed 58 of 125 passes for 822 yards and five touchdowns while Dexter Wyble has played in six games completing 53 of 90 passes for 645 yards.

Rajan Cunningham has led the rushing attack with 313 yards on 87 carries. Receiver Kristopher Martin has been a favorite target, catching 22 passes for 332 yards and one touchdown.

Defensive lineman Devin Nixon highlights the defense with a team-high 58 total tackles and 28 solo tackles while linebacker Herman Lee has a team-best seven sacks.

McMurry hasn't had a winning season since going 8-3 overall in 2012.

>> RECORD WATCH: Linebacker Ronin Williams is 34 tackles away from tying the school record for career tackles with three games to go.

Williams currently has 231 career tackles. The record of 265 was set by Dusty Hill from 2001-2004.

With 82 total tackles, Williams leads the American Southwest Conference while he ranks third in tackles for loss with 10.5.

He currently ranks sixth in NCAA Division III in total tackles.

>> THE OFFENSE: Sul Ross has the fourth-best offense in the conference.

Currently, the Lobos rank second in passing yards behind Howard Payne. Sul Ross has tallied 2,227 passing yards while Howard Payne has 2,375.

Wide receiver Vicente Luevano is tied for the conference lead by scoring the most points in a contest with 24, which was set against Austin College on Sept. 17. Luevano's 54 total points are tied for third-best in the conference.

Luevano ranks seventh in receiving yards in the conference while Austin Ogunmakin is third overall with 591 yards.
