MARSHALL — The Sul Ross State volleyball program had the magic early in the season when it defeated and stunned East Texas Baptist at home.
For the second meeting, the Tigers got the upper hand by defeating the Lobos in four sets, 19-25, 25-23, 21-25, 19-25, Saturday afternoon at Ornelas Gym.
The Lobos have lost five matches in a row by four sets to fall into eighth-place in the American Southwest Conference standings.
After trailing 3-0 early in the opening set, the Lobos went on a 4-0 run to take a one-point lead. The rally included two kills from
Annika Canaba and a service ace by
Victoria Flores.
East Texas Baptist then went off on an 8-0 run to take a 12-5 lead.
Sul Ross trailed by as much as nine until coming back to within four points late in the game after a service ace from
Tatyana Colon.
The Tigers then closed out the set by taking advantage of an attacking error and a kill by Avery Reid.
There were five different lead changes to start the second set before the Lobos used a 4-0 run to take a 13-11 lead.
East Texas Baptist then gained some momentum by taking an 18-17 lead. Sul Ross came back to tie the game and retake the lead after two attacking errors by the Tigers.
The score was then tied three more times.
Sul Ross was able to close out the game with a 4-0 run to win, 25-23.
Cassandra Espinoza tallied two kills to help the Lobos tie the match.
The momentum carried into the third set as the Lobos held the lead for a majority of the game.
East Texas Baptist went on a 7-0 run to flip the tables and take a 17-13 lead. The Lobos attempted a comeback to trail by three, but the Tigers held on to take the lead in the match.
During the final set, Sul Ross held a 1-0 lead right out of the gate before the Tigers took off on a 5-0 run to take the lead and never look back.
The Lobos had trailed by as little as two points in the middle of the set, but East Texas Baptist used a 4-0 run to pull away and gain some breathing room to eventually take the match.
Canaba tallied a game-high 21 kills while she also had 12 assists and 16 digs. This was her fifth triple-double of the year.
She currently leads the team with 247 kills.
Taryn Griner added with 11 kills while Espinoza tallied five.
Faith Herrera had 19 digs while
Kamrynn Caruth recorded 11 digs, 21 assists and two service aces.
