Never stop dreaming big dreams.
That's been the motto for the Sul Ross State women's soccer team late in the season.
In the last six matches, the Lobos had gone 0-4-2.
As of late, Sul Ross has been slowly putting things together.
On Saturday afternoon, all the pieces locked into place.
The Lobos notched their first American Southwest Conference victory of the year, 2-1, over the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets at the Lobo Soccer Field.
More importantly, the win puts Sul Ross in a two-way tie for sixth place with five points alongside the University of the Ozarks, the final playoff spot for the conference tournament.
Sul Ross has fared well against Howard Payne going 7-1 since 2015. The Lobos had won six straight meetings against the Yellow Jackets before Howard Payne ended the streak last year.
"This is not just a big win for us, but it's a big win for our fans, our admins — everybody from above," said Sul Ross head coach
John Dominguez. "I'm very proud of them. We got the win. We got the three points."
Sul Ross got on the board quickly, six minutes into the first half.
Aylin Pereyra found the back of the net off an assist by
Yissel Olivares.
During the 11th minute, Howard Payne tied up the game with a goal from Kate Recendez with an assist from Karlee Friebele.
The Lobos fought back and took a 2-1 lead during the 16th minute when
Joanna Estrada tallied a goal off an assist by
Nuvia Guillen.
Sul Ross showed that it's not about the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the overall fight.
Playing hard-nosed defense, the Lobos stymied the Yellow Jackets during the second half to secure the victory.
"It feels amazing. We're just trying to work hard for the next two games to make it to the playoffs," said Pereyra. "We've been through a lot these couple of games, but we just keep fighting.
"We just need that effort, more confidence in each other and that's what we brought it in today."
Sul Ross matched Howard Payne with seven shots, but the Lobos had more shots on the mark with five.
Deserie Herrera, Pereyra and Estrada had two shots each while
Judith Macias tallied one shot.
Alitzel Ybarra made three saves as the goalkeeper.
