Concordia defeats Sul Ross in four sets

Taryn Griner leads the way with 10 kills

AUSTIN — The Sul Ross State volleyball team dropped another match in four sets.

On Tuesday night, the Concordia Tornados defeated the Lobos, 25-21, 16-25, 25-21, 25-18, at the Concordia Fieldhouse.

Sul Ross dropped its fourth straight match.

In the opening set, the game was tied 4-4 until the Tornados went on a 4-0 run to take the lead.

The Lobos tried to keep things close as they trailed by one in the middle of the set after two kills by Daniella Garcia and Cassandra Espinoza.

Sul Ross was behind by three late in the game, but Concordia prevailed.

Early in the second set, the Lobos trailed 7-5 before going on a 3-0 run to take a one-point lead. Loren Garcia had a kill and a service ace during the rally.

Concordia tied up the match and then the Lobos regained the lead after a kill from Taryn Griner.

Annika Canaba came up with a clutch kill to make the score 12-9.

Sul Ross took advantage of a few attack errors by Concordia to lead 18-14. The Lobos later went on a 5-0 run that included kills from Canaba and Victoria Flores.

Canaba ended the set with a kill to help the Lobos win the game by nine to tie up the match.

After gaining momentum, Sul Ross immediately found itself in a hole during the third set. Concordia used a 4-0 run to take a 9-3 lead.

The Tornados led by seven until the Lobos went on a 5-0 run to trail by two. Canaba had three service aces and a kill to help her team battle back.

Taking advantage of a few errors by Sul Ross, the Tornados were able to pull away in the third game.

In the final set, the Lobos held a 10-6 lead after going on a 4-0 run that was highlighted by a kill from Griner and a service ace by Tatyana Colon.

Concordia then flipped the script by using a 7-0 run to take a 14-11 lead. From that point on, the Tornados never looked back as they were able to come away with the four-set victory.

Griner led the Lobos with 10 kills while Canaba finished with nine kills, 11 assists, four service aces and eight digs.

Daniella Garcia added with seven kills and five block assists while Loren Garcia tallied five kills.

Flores and Espinoza each finished with four kills.
