WOMEN'S SOCCER: Lobos earn hard-fought 2-2 draw against Hardin-Simmons

Pereyra, Olivares score for Sul Ross

The Hardin-Simmons University women's soccer program has been a dynasty since 1996.

Since 2003, the program has dominated the American Southwest Conference, winning 19-straight conference titles.

Along the journey, the Cowgirls won a national title in 2010 and made a Final Four appearance in 2017.

Sul Ross State has never defeated Hardin-Simmons since 2015. The Lobos came close in March 2021 with a double overtime 2-2 draw.

Now fast forward to 2022.

The Lobos put together all the little things to come away with a hard-fought and well-earned 2-2 draw Saturday afternoon at the Lobo Soccer Field.

"Details matter. Hustling back on the play matters. We got a 2-2 result against a team that won 19 straight conference titles," said Sul Ross head coach John Dominguez. "The togetherness is there.

"We worked hard and we got the results. I don't have no kids, but this is a proud dad moment for me right here."

Seven minutes into the match, Aylin Pereyra put the Lobos ahead 1-0 as she scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Kaylen McNatt tied up the match by finding the back of the net in the 35th minute. Two minutes later, Emma Thompson put the Cowgirls ahead 2-1.

In the second half, Yissel Olivares lofted a ball over the goalkeeper to tie up the score during the 47th minute.

The Lobos played hard-nosed defense until the final minute to secure the draw.

Sul Ross proved that it can compete with any team in the conference.

"That's that fight in the dog. That's a really strong program. We want to become better than them," added Dominguez.

Olivares now has three goals on the year. The Lobos had four shots total with two coming from Olivares.

Defensively, Alitzel Ybarra made six saves in the net.

The Lobos picked up a point in the conference standings as they sit in seventh place, just a game behind Howard Payne in sixth.

"Even though it's a tie, we still wanted that win. We played really well. Everybody's just got to keep their head up, believe in themselves, keep pushing until the end — let's go get these wins," said Olivares.
