ALPINE, Texas - Men's hoops battled throughout on Saturday in a 98-96 overtime loss to LeTourneau.
"What a battle against a very talented LETU team," said head coach
Xavier Webb. "Offensively it was good to see it clicking and knocking down shots. We need to clean some things up defensively going into next week, but I'm proud of the fight our guys put up at home. Our student section was big time for us down the stretch. I'm looking forward to seeing them in our next home series!"
First Half
Sully took their first lead with a layup from
Trey Nelson for a 9-8 advantage. Tied 9-9, Nelson found the hoop again with a pair of layups to lead 13-9. They continued to hold the lead, upping it to as many as six on a
Gabe Sanchez triple for a 25-19 score. LETU retook the advantage at 35-32 and then upped it to five. Sully finished the first half with a 6-0 run with a
Mitchell Martinez three-point play and a
Caelyb Kerley triple for a 42-39 lead at the half.
Second Half
Sully continued to hold a slim advantage until LETU tied it 52-52. The Yellowjackets retook the lead at 58-57 before the Lobos used a 7-0 run for a 64-58 advantage. LeTourneau then came back with a 10-1 answer to go ahead three. Sully was able to tie it 72-72, but the Yellowjackets eventually went ahead 81-74 with just under two minutes left. The Lobos clawed back, outscoring LETU 10-3 down the stretch. Dixon finished the comeback with last-second layup to tie it 84-84 and force overtime.
Overtime
Sanchez opened overtime with a triple to take a three-point lead. LETU answered back with a three-pointer and eventually upped their advantage to six with 49 seconds left. The Lobos cut it to two with 19 seconds remaining and forced a turnover to give Sully a final possession.
Julian Paredes got a good look from beyond the arc, but the ball failed to find the bottom of the net in a 98-96 loss.
Stats
Nelson finished with career-highs of 26 points, 13 rebounds and five steals.
Dixon scored 23 points and added six rebounds.
Sanchez shot 7-of-11 form the field and 4-of-6 from three for 18 points.
The Lobos stand at 6-12 and 3-10 in the ASC. LeTourneau improves to 14-2 and 9-2.
Sully now hits the road to play University of the Ozarks on Thursday, January 27.
