Lobos fall to East Texas Baptist in five sets #SRSU | #ASCvb | #d3vb

MARSHALL, Texas - Annika Canaba notched her third triple-double of the volleyball season on Saturday in a tough five-set loss to East Texas Baptist.

"I'm proud of our team," said head coach Troy Canaba. "We fought hard and never gave up. Playing hard on the road is tough. We learned a lot and I'm excited for the season."

Set 1:
Isabella Ruiz opened the match with a kill before ETBU took the lead and upped it to as many as two.

Down 5-3, two bad sets and at attack error gave the Lobos a 6-5 lead.

The Tigers used a 3-0 answer for an 8-6 lead that soon became tied with a kill from Taryn Griner and an attack error for an 8-8 score.

A Sully service error gave ETBU a slim lead that did not last long. Mia Bella Ruiz tied it with a kill before Daniella Garcia's kill gave the Lobos a 10-9 lead to start an 8-0 run. Griner added another kill and Mia Bella Ruiz had a pair of service aces for a 16-9 advantage.

The Tigers later cut it to five before Sully finished the set on a 4-0 run to take it 25-16. Kamrynn Caruth started with a kill and Canaba finished it with an ace and a kill.

Set 2:
Caruth started set two with a kill and an ace for an early 2-0 lead.

ETBU answered with two in a row for a tie that was quickly met with a 5-0 run. Faith Herrera coupled an ace with kills by Canaba and Victoria Flores for a 7-2 score.

Sully continued to hold the lead until the Tigers stormed back with a 7-0 run to lead 18-16.

Isabella Ruiz ended the run with a kill to start a 3-1 answer for a 19-19 tie. ETBU took the lead back with a kill before kills from Isabella Ruiz and Mia Bella Ruiz gave the Lobos a 21-20 advantage.

The Tigers scored the next two before Mia Bella Ruiz tied the match at 22-22 with a kill.

ETBU scored three of the final four of the set for a close 25-23 win in set two.

Set 3:
Sully's first lead of the third came at 3-2 but turned into a 7-3 deficit after a 5-0 answer from the Tigers.

The Lobos cut it to one with a 3-0 run and eventually tied it at 8-8.

Canaba gave Sully an 11-10 lead with a kill but again trailed by as many as two soon after.

The Lobos turned a 14-12 deficit into a 17-14 advantage with a 5-0 run. Victoria Flores started with a kill that was followed by a Tatyana Colon ace. Colon later served up another ace before Canaba finished the run with a kill to lead by three.

Sully held a lead the rest of the way with Canaba finishing set three with a kill for a 25-20 win.

Set 4:
The Lobos opened with the first point on a kill by Isabella Ruiz. The first six points of the set went back and forth with ETBU's first lead coming at 4-3.

Sully immediately took the lead back with the next two to start a 4-1 run to go up 7-5.

The Lobos upped their lead to three until ETBU flipped it to an 11-9 lead of their own with a 5-0 run.

Sully erased a 16-12 deficit with a 4-0 run to tie it. Canaba added a kill and an ace to make it 16-16.

A 5-1 run gave the Lobos their next lead at 21-18 and they held the advantage all the way to set point.

With Sully leading 24-23, ETBU scored the final three to even the match with a 26-24 win in set four.

Set 5:
The Tigers led twice early, but the Lobos were able to tie it up at 1-1 and 2-2. ETBU then opened it up to a 6-2 advantage with the next four points.

Sully twice cut it to three before the Tigers took an 11-5 lead.

The Lobos got back in it with a 3-0 run started by a kill from Victoria Flores for an 11-8 score.

ETBU went on to score four of the final six of the fifth set for a 15-10 win and 3-2 match victory.

Canaba's third triple-double included a game-high 23 kills, 15 assists and 14 digs.

Caruth led both sides with 24 assists and added nine digs.

Mia Bella Ruiz had a game-high 23 digs. Colon and Herrera were also in double digits with 13 and 11 respectively.

The Lobos fall to 5-4 on the season and 3-2 in conference play. ETBU improves to 4-5 and 3-2.

Sully next hosts Concordia at the Gallego Center on Tuesday, September 21.
