AUSTIN, Texas - Softball was bested 4-3 in a close game one before falling 9-1 in game two of Saturday's road doubleheader with Concordia.
Game One: Tornados 4 - Lobos 3
Game one remained scoreless through the first two innings until
Nadia Valverde broke the tie in the top of the third with a double that scored
Samantha Chavez and
Miranda Martinez for a 2-0 lead.
Concordia answered right back in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs for a 2-2 tie heading to the fourth.
Sully retook the lead in the top of the fifth when
Camryn Hardin scored on a passed ball for a 3-2 lead.
It remained 3-2 until the bottom of the sixth when the Tornados added two runs for a 4-3 advantage.
In the top of the seventh, the Lobos had the tying run on third and go-ahead run on second with two outs, but Valverde grounded out to third to give CTX the 4-3 win.
Valverde had a game-high two runs batted in with a double and a walk.
Chavez and Hardin each added a double.
Annika Canaba swiped her team-best 12th stolen base of the season.
Martinez shouldered the loss after six innings on the mound with two earned runs given up.
Game Two: Tornados 9 - Lobos 1
Martinez put Sully ahead in the top of the first with a single to center field that scored Chavez for a 1-0 advantage.
Concordia took the lead in the bottom of the first with two for a 2-1 lead.
Both sides were held scoreless in the second and the Lobos were sent away in the third as the score remained 2-1.
The Tornados extended their lead to 6-1 with four runs in the bottom of the third. CTX went on to score three more between the final three innings of the game while keeping Sully scoreless for a 9-1 win in game two.
Martinez and
Payslee Sims both added a team-high two hits.
The Lobos are 10-11 (10-9 ASC) on the season. Concordia stands at 20-11 (14-7 ASC)
Sully is next set to host McMurry on Friday, April 23 for a doubleheader to start a three-game series at Lobo Field.
