ALPINE, Texas - Baseball came away with a doubleheader sweep and series win after 12-9 and 25-18 wins over Hardin-Simmons on Saturday at Kokernot Field.
Game One: Lobos 12 - Cowboys 9 (7 innings)
HSU started with a pair of runs in the top of the first for a 2-0 lead.
Jorge Marquez put the first run on the board for the Lobos in the bottom of the inning after reaching on an error that scored
Jalen Benton.
Carsen Thor then singled home Leech for a 2-2 tie. Lindsey continued the trend with an RBI single to right field that scored Marquez to take their first lead of the game.
Tristan Karels later grounded out to the pitcher to score Thor for the fourth run of the inning. The fifth run came on a
Jared Lorenz infield single that scored Lindsey before Benton later plated
Matthew Wheeler on a sacrifice fly to right field for a 6-2 lead after the first.
The Cowboys cut it to 6-4 in the top of the third with a pair of runs.
Karels answered back in the bottom of the inning with a solo shot to right field for a 7-4 advantage.
HSU went ahead in the top of the fourth with the help of four runs for an 8-7 lead.
The Lobos were quick to answer with two in the bottom of the fourth. Benton first stole third and advanced home on a throwing error before Lindsey singled home Leech for a 9-8 advantage.
Sully padded their lead in the fifth when
Isaac Aleman doubled home Karels for a 10-8 lead. The Lobos tacked on two more in the inning with a Leech walk to score
Jared Lorenz and later a Thor sacrifice fly to center field that scored Benton for a 12-8 lead.
The Cowboys added one more run in the seventh, but
Connor Archer was able to close the door on a 12-9 win in game one.
Cade Watson picked up his first career after 1.2 innings in relief. He allowed one hit and had one strikeout.
Benton went 2-for-3 in the leadoff spot with a game-high three runs and added an RBI and a stolen base.
Leech, Lindsey, and Lorenz each added two hits. Lindsey and Lorenz both stole a base.
Game Two: Lobos 25 - Cowboys 18
The Cowboys started off scoring again with two in the top of the first for the advantage and grew it to 4-0 with two more in the top of the third.
Sully got on the board in the bottom of the third when
Richard Bailey stole third and scored on a throwing error. Lorenz later walked in Leech to make it a 4-2 game. Hartley then walked home Thor to cut it to one. Aleman stepped in after a pitching change and plated Marquez on a sacrifice fly to center field for a 4-4 tie. Benton then hit a three-run home run to left field to give the Lobos a 7-4 lead,
HSU retook the lead in the top of the fourth with four runs for an 8-7 advantage.
Sully tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when Thor doubled home Leech. Lindsey then gave the Lobos lead after singling home Lindsey for a 9-8 advantage.
The Cowboys plated a run in the top of the fifth on a fielder's choice to make it 9-9.
Leech gave the Lobos the lead in the bottom of the inning when he singled home Benton. Lindsey later put the Lobos up 11-9 with a single to left field that scored Bailey.
The sixth inning saw no scoring before HSU added three in the top of the seventh for a 12-11 lead.
Thor tied things in the bottom of the seventh with a double to left field that scored Leech. Marquez later stepped in and hit a three-run home run for a 15-12 lead. Benton finished scoring in the seventh when he singled home Aleman for a 16-12 score.
Hardin-Simmons continued the pattern of lead changes with six runs in the top of the eighth for an 18-16 advantage.
Marquez didn't let that lead last for long. Leech started the bottom of the eighth with a walk before Thor singled and Lindsey then walked to load the bases. Marquez stepped in and sent a grand slam to right field for a 20-18 lead. Aleman later doubled home Lorenz for a three-run advantage. Thor later stepped in and added emphasis to the new lead with a two run shot to score Leech for a 25-18 score.
Ian Craigie took to the mound again for the ninth after entering with two outs in the eighth and pitched a shutout ninth for a 25-18 win in game two to take the series over the Cowboys.
Marquez finished with a game-high seven runs batted in on two hits and scored three runs.
Thor batted 4-for-7 with four runs batted in and tied Leech with five runs scored.
Benton also had four runs batted in and scored twice with two hits.
Craigie picked up the win after 1.1 innings of one-run ball on the mound with a strikeout.
The Lobos improve to 8-16 on the season and 5-13 in conference play. HSU stands at 7-16 and 3-12.
Sully next plays host to Concordia on Friday, April 16 with a doubleheader at Kokernot Field.
