ALPINE, Texas - Softball fell 7-5 in game one before
Samantha Chavez walked it off in a 3-2 game two win for a doubleheader split with Mary Hardin-Baylor.
Game One: Crusaders 7 - Lobos 5
The Crusaders scored the first four runs of the game between the first two innings for a 4-0 lead.
Starter
Jodie Vaughn was pulled with one out in the second inning and replaced by
Danielle Gomez.
Payslee Sims brought in
Nadia Valverde on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the second for a 4-1 score.
UMHB upped their lead to 5-1 with another run in the top of the third.
The Lobos chipped away at the deficit with back-to-back RBI doubles from
Samantha Chavez and
Annika Canaba for a 5-3 score after three.
Gomez settled in and pitched shutout fourth and fifth innings. The Crusaders did the same for a 5-3 game going to the sixth.
Sully's pitcher again shutout UMHB in the sixth before helping out her own cause in the sixth with an RBI single that scored
Rebecca Rodriguez to make it 5-4.
Jodie Vaughn reentered the game with two outs and two on in the seventh but couldn't get the final out before two scored for a 7-4 UMHB lead.
Valverde singled home Chavez in the seventh to cut it to two before the Lobos eventually loaded the bases with two outs. UMHB was able to get
Rebecca Rodriguez to pop out for a 7-5 win in game one.
Valverde went 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Camryn Hardin batted 3-for-4 in the leadoff spot with a run scored.
Vaughn shouldered the loss and Gomez threw 5.2 innings of relief.
Game Two: Lobos 3 - Crusaders 2
Hardin doubled home
Marley Moralez in the bottom of the third for a 1-0 advantage.
Starter
Miranda Martinez shined in the circle with five shutout innings to keep the 1-0 lead.
Hardin sent a sacrifice fly to center field in the bottom of the fifth to score Moralez for a 2-0 score.
Moralez relieved Martinez after 5.2 innings and kept the shutout going into the seventh.
A pair of errors by Chavez in the top of the seventh led to two runs scoring for UMHB to bring it to the bottom of the inning tied 2-2.
Rebecca Rodriguez led off the bottom of the inning with a walk before pinch runner
Alexis Gonzales moved to third on an error that moved Martinez to second. UMHB was able to get the next two outs to bring up Chavez. She proved clutch with an RBI single to the shortstop to score Gonzales for the 3-2 walk-off win.
Hardin led the way with two runs batted in.
Moralez scored twice and also picked up the win on the mound after 1.1 innings of one hit ball.
The Lobos stand at 8-7 on the season and 8-5 in conference play. UMHB is 14-10 and 8-6.
Sully and the Crusaders finish the series tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. in the rubber match at Lobo Field.
