Jodie Vaughn flourished on the mound over a complete seven innings in a 5-0 shutout of UMHB to take the rubber match on Friday at Lobo Field.
After a
Samantha Chavez single and
Annika Canaba double,
Miranda Martinez singled home Chavez for a 1-0 lead in the first. Canaba later came around to score on a
Nadia Valverde single for a 2-0 advantage. Martinez came in to score on an error by the center fielder for a 3-0 lead heading to the second.
Canaba hit her second double of the game to plate Chavez for a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
Vaughn continued to keep the UMHB offense at bay with two more shutout innings for a 4-0 score going bottom four.
Halie Guillen led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run to right center for a 5-0 advantage.
Vaughn received all the offense she would need in the outing. She finished the game with two more shutout innings to go seven strong on six hits, no runs, no walks, and three strikeouts in a 5-0 win.
Canaba finished 3-for-3 with three doubles, an RBI, and a run scored.
Chavez scored a game-high two runs.
The Lobos improve to 8-7 and 9-5 in conference play. UMHB stands at 14-11 and 8-7.
Sully next hits the road for a doubleheader against Hardin-Simmons on Friday, April 9.
