ABILENE, Texas - Softball fell 12-4 in game one before
Miranda Martinez pitched a complete game to end the night with a 6-2 win for a doubleheader split with Hardin-Simmons.
Game One: Cowgirls 12 - Lobos 4
Miranda Martinez got the Lobos on the board early with a two-RBI double to score
Annika Canaba and
Camryn Hardin for a 2-0 lead.
Payslee Sims continued the hot start with a single to score Martinez to give the Lobos a 3-0 advantage in the first.
Halie Guillen would finish the frame with an RBI single to score Sims and give the Lobos a 4-0 lead going bottom one.
Hardin-Simmons answered with one in the second and two in the third to cut the lead to 4-3 in favor of Sul Ross.
The Cowgirls continued with five in the bottom half of the fourth to take an 8-4 lead. They'd tack on a pair in each of the fifth and sixth while holding the Lobos scoreless for a 12-4 win in game one.
Jodie Vaughn shouldered the loss after 3.1 innings in the circle.
Sims tallied a team-high two hits with an RBI and a run scored.
Canaba and Martinez each had a double.
Game Two: Lobos 6 - Cowgirls 2
Sul Ross started fast in game two with Martinez again getting the offense going with an RBI double to plate Canaba to give the Lobos a 1-0 lead after one.
In the second inning,
Samantha Chavez cashed in with a single to bring in Guillen. Hardin later came in to score on a wild pitch for a 3-0 advantage after two.
The Cowgirls ended the shutout in the third inning with a run to cut it to 3-1.
Canaba extended the lead with a two-RBI triple that scored Chavez and Hardin to make it 5-1 in the fourth. Martinez knocked in her second run of the game with a double to left field to bring in Canaba to open up a 6-1 Lobo lead.
Martinez also started the game and would allow just one more run in the final three innings on the mound to give the Lobos the 6-2 win.
Martinez pitched all seven innings to earn her third win of the season.
Canaba tied a game-high three hits, scored twice and had two runs batted in.
Martinez matched Canaba with two RBI. She tied Chavez and
Heather Rios with two hits each.
The Lobos improve to 10-8 (10-6 ASC) and will look to clinch the series tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. in Abilene.
