Lobos take Tuesday home opener with 3-0 and 3-1 sweep of Howard Payne #SRSU | #ASCvb | #d3vb

ALPINE, Texas - Volleyball held their home opener on Tuesday, sweeping Howard Payne in straight matches, 3-0 and 3-1.

Match One - SRSU 3 HPU 0
(25-19, 25-14, 25-15)

Set 1:
Kyleigh Mulanax started the match off with a kill, but the Lobos quickly fell behind 4-1 after a run from the Lady Jackets.

Sully quickly flipped the script with a 6-0 run for a 7-4 advantage. Annika Canaba started with a kill and later notched another before a Faith Herrera service ace.

Both sides swapped the next seven points before HPU scored two in a row to trail 10-9.

A quick 4-0 run with kills from Isabella Ruiz, Mulanax, Loren Garcia, and a service ace from Tatyana Colon made it 14-9.

Later after another Mulanax kill, the Lady Jackets tied it at 15-15 with a 4-0 answer.

Loren Garcia put the Lobos back up one, but HPU answered with a pair to lead 17-16.

Sully quickly took the lead back with a 4-0 run that saw a kill from Mia Bella Ruiz and a service ace from Loren Garcia for a 20-17 advantage.

The Lady Jackets cut it back to two, but that slim lead was doubled by a Canaba kill and service ace to go ahead 22-18.

After HPU cut it to three, the Lobos finished the set with the final three points. Mia Bella Ruiz put Sully one away with an ace before Mulanax finished the set with a kill to take it 25-19.

Set 2:
Sully put the first point on the board on an HPU attack error before the Lady Jackets scored the same way.

A 4-0 run from there gave the Lobos the lead after two kills from Canaba, one from Mia Bella Ruiz, and one from Loren Garcia.

Sully eventually took a 7-2 lead after another kill from Mia Bella Ruiz and a service ace from Loren Garcia.

HPU responded with a 4-0 run before that was ended on a service error for an 8-6 lead for the Lobos.

The Lady Jackets tied it with the next two but again saw a run end with a service error.

HPU took their largest lead of the set with a 4-0 run but saw the Lobos answer with a 7-0 streak for a 16-12 score. It was finished by three straight service aces from Colon.

Sully saw the lead twice cut to three before finishing set two on an 8-0 run to take it 25-14. Canaba started the run with a kill and Loren Garcia added four in a row during it.

Set 3:
HPU got out of the gate quickly in set three with a 4-0 run.

The Lobos scored the next two with a service error and a kill by Isabella Ruiz but fell behind 7-2 with a 3-0 answer from the Lady Jackets.

Trailing 8-3, three straight attack errors from HPU put Sully within two at 8-6.

The Lady Jackets increased their lead to 9-6 but soon saw that diminish with a 5-0 run from the Lobos for an 11-9 advantage. Mulanax and Canaba notched kills before three attack errors put them ahead by two.

That 5-0 answer would eventually be a part of a bigger 9-1 run after a pair of kills from Canaba and two attack errors made it 15-10.

HPU cut it to a pair with the next two, but Sully took control with 7-0 answer to lead 22-12.

Sully used kills by Mia Bella Ruiz, Isabella Ruiz, and Daniella Garcia down the stretch for a 25-15 win and 3-0 sweep in match one.

Canaba finished the match with a game-high 11 kills to go with 11 assists and eight digs.

Colon tied for a game-high 14 digs and had a match-high five service aces.

Vivian Moya also shared a game-best with 12 assists.


Match Two - SRSU 3 HPU 1
(25-13, 25-19, 19-25, 25-16)

Set 1:
Sully set the tone early with an 8-2 run. Canaba added two more kills to go with one each from Mulanax and Mia Bella Ruiz. Moya also added an ace for the six-point lead.

HPU cut it to 8-5, but Canaba and Loren Garcia notched kills in a 3-0 answer.

Sully eventually expanded their lead in set one to 11 with a 7-2 to for an 18-7 advantage.

The closest the Lady Jackets came again was eight as the Lobos finished the set on a 6-2 run. Canaba added three more kills, including the final point off an assist from Moya to take it 25-13.

Set 2:
HPU jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead and would remain ahead or tied until Mulanax tied it 9-9 with a kill before a Moya service ace gave the Lobos a 10-9 lead that stretched to 11-9.

The Lady Jackets answered with three to retake the lead before back-to-back kills from Isabella Ruiz and Mia Bella Ruiz made it 13-13.

Sully held small leads as the set progressed until they used a 4-1 run for a 22-17 advantage.

The Lobos finished the set with three of the final four points for a 25-19 win in set two.

Set 3:
HPU again started quickly with a 4-0 run and eventual 6-2 lead out of the gate.

Sully played from behind until a 4-0 run put them ahead 11-10. It was started by a kill from Mia Bella Ruiz and finished by one from Mulanax.

The Lady Jackets tied it with a kill for the next point but another 4-0 run put Sully ahead 15-11.

Sully held on to the lead for the meantime but fell behind 19-17 after a 4-0 run from HPU.

The Lobos twice cut it to one, but HPU scored the final five of the set to take it 25-19.

Set 4:
Down 1-0, Sully scored the next five for a 5-1 lead that saw Canaba add three more kills.

The Lady Jackets cut it to two with a small 3-1 answer but fell behind by 10 after an 8-0 run by the Lobos. Isabella Ruiz notched three kills to go with one from Mia Bella Ruiz and a service ace from Canaba.

HPU stayed competitive with a 6-2 answer for a 16-10 score.

Sully would expand their lead to nine with a small 5-2 answer and a 21-12 advantage with three more kills by Canaba.

The Lady Jackets made a final attempt at a comeback with the next three, but a 4-1 answer with a final kill from Isabella Ruiz closed the door for a 25-16 win in set four and a 3-1 match win.

Canaba led the way with a game-high 26 kills, adding 13 assists and nine digs.

Moya again was top in assists with a game-high 29.

The Lobos improve to 4-2 on the season and 4-2 in conference. HPU falls to 3-11 and 0-10.

Sully next travels to Belton to take on Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday, March 12.
