Lobos drop both ends of Friday doubleheader to Mary Hardin-Baylor #SRSU | #ASCvb | #d3vb

BELTON, Texas - Coming off a home opening sweep of Howard Payne, the Lobos suffered the same fate in Belton on Friday against Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Match One - UMHB 3 SRSU 0
(15-25, 18-25,15-25)

Set 1:
The Lobos got out to a 1-0 lead on an attack error but fell behind 3-1 soon after.

Both sides swapped the next six points before Sully made it two in a row on back-to-back kills from Annika Canaba for a 6-6 tie.

UMHB immediately stretched it to an 11-6 lead with a 5-0 run.

The Lobos twice cut it to four, but the Crusaders kept a modest lead the rest of the set for a 25-15 win.

Set 2:
The two teams swapped the first four points of set two with UMHB then scoring two straight for a 4-2 lead.

Sully responded with a kill from Loren Garcia, a service ace from Canaba, and an attack error to go ahead 5-4.

Set two was back and forth from the start with each side holding small one-point leads until the Crusaders broke a 9-9 tie with a 4-0 run.

Sully got within three on seven occasions but fell 25-18 after UMHB closed set two on a 4-0 run.

Set 3:
UMHB opened the third set on a 3-0 run before Canaba put a stop to that with a kill on an assist from Vivian Moya to trail 3-1.

Down 6-3, Sully used a small 5-2 run for an 8-8 tie. It saw two kills from Isabella Ruiz, one each from Daniella Garcia and Loren Garcia, and a service ace from Tatyana Colon.

The Crusaders answered back with a 6-0 run to lead 14-8. Canaba ended that run with a kill off another assist from Moya.

UHMB controlled the pace the rest of set three and took it 25-15 for the sweep.

Canaba finished with a team-high 11 kills with 11 assists and five digs.

Moya had a team-high 20 assists and Colon finished with a team-best 11 digs.


Match Two - UMHB 3 SRSU 0
(21-25, 20-25,15-25)

Set 1:
The Lobos got out to a quick start with a 4-2 run that started with a kill from Isabella Ruiz and finished with an ace from Faith Herrera.

Sully upped their lead to 6-3 when Daniella Garcia notched a kill and then an ace.

The Lobos held a slight lead until UMHB retook it at 9-7 with a 4-0 answer.

Back-to-back attack errors helped Sully to a 9-9 tie.

The Crusaders answered with the next three points but were met with a 3-1 answer from the Lobos for a 13-12 UHMB lead.

Down 14-12, three in a row from the Lobos put them ahead 15-14.

The Crusaders wouldn't trail for long with a 5-0 answer for a 19-15 advantage.

Daniella Garcia and Kyleigh Mulanax responded with back-to-back kills to cut it to 19-17 but quickly fell behind 22-17 with three in a row from UMHB.

Sully cut it to 23-21 with a 4-1 run that saw a pair of kills from Canaba, but UMHB finished with the final two for a 25-21 set one win.

Set 2:
The Crusaders started off with the first two points before back-to-back kills from Daniella Garcia and Loren Garcia tied the set.

UMHB scored the next three and the Lobos followed suit with three of their own for a 5-5 score. It ended with kills from Mulanax and Mia Bella Ruiz.

Sully fell behind 13-8 but put a stop to the run with a kill from Moya to trail by four.

Down seven, the Lobos used a 5-1 run to cut it to a 19-16 deficit. It was finished with three straight kills from Mulanax, Mia Bella Ruiz, and Loren Garcia.

UMHB upped their lead to six, but the Lobos weren't done after three straight with the help of kills from Mia Bella Ruiz and Isabella Ruiz for a 23-20 score.

The Crusaders were able to close the door on the second set with the final two points to take it 25-20.

Set 3:
Sully fell behind 6-0 in set three before a service error put them on the board. UMHB's offense kept it going early with the next five for an 11-1 lead.

Trailing by 13, the Lobos got back in the game with a 7-3 run to trail 21-12. Mia Bella Ruiz added two more kills during the run and Moya had a service ace.

The lead was good enough for UMHB to run even with the Lobos through the rest of the set and take it 25-15.

Canaba led Sully in assists in the second match with 10.

Mia Bella Ruiz finished with a team-best 11 digs.

The Lobos stand at an even 4-4 on the season and in conference.

Sully next travels to Abilene on Monday, March 15 for a doubleheader against Hardin-Simmons.
