ALPINE, Texas - It was the later innings of each game against Louisiana College that doomed the Lobos in a series sweep for the Wildcats this past weekend at Kokernot Field.
Friday, March 19
Game One: Wildcats 16 - Lobos 11 (7 innings)
Louisiana College put up two in the first inning for an early lead.
Carsen Thor answered in the bottom of the first with a single to score
Ashton Leech to cut it to 2-1. After Thor stole second,
Adrian Munoz stepped in and reached on an error by the first basemen that scored Thor for a 2-2 tie.
Jett Hartley later stepped in and sent a three-run home run to left center for a 5-2 lead after the first.
Sully added another run in the second on a Leech solo home run for a 6-2 advantage.
LC retook a 7-6 lead in the top of the third after putting five runs on the board.
The Lobos were sent away in the top of the third and they did the same to the Wildcats in the top of the fourth for a 7-6 score heading to the bottom of the fourth.
Hartley scored on a passed ball in the fourth for a 7-7 tie.
Jalen Benton then grounded out to second that scored
Isaac Aleman for an 8-7 lead. After a Leech single and a Marquez flyout, Thor crushed a two-run home run to left center for a 10-7 advantage.
Louisiana College didn't take long to retake the lead with five in the fifth to go up 12-10. They'd score four more in the top of the sixth to widen their lead and eventually take a 16-11 win in game one.
Both Leech and Harley led the Lobos with three hits each.
Hartley and Thor had a team-high three runs batted in.
Sam Russell shouldered his second loss of the season after 4.2 innings on the mound.
Game Two: Wildcats 11 - Lobos 4
The Lobos took an early 1-0 lead in the first after
Jared Lorenz reached on an error by the third baseman that scored
Tyler Tupper.
Louisiana College scored a run in the next five innings for a 5-1 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth.
Matthew Wheeler cut it to three in the sixth with a groundout to short that scored
Richard Bailey for a 5-2 game.
The Wildcats added another in the seventh to stretch it to a four-run lead.
Sully wouldn't go away with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Marquez first tripled home Tupper before Thor grounded out to plate Marquez for a 6-4 score.
LC scored the final five over the last two innings for an 11-4 win in game two.
Kyle Williams was given the loss after five innings on the bump as the starter. He gave up five runs, three earned, walked three, and had four strikeouts.
Saturday, March 20
Game Three: Wildcats 14 - Lobos 4 (8 innings)
Isaiah Moya took the bump in game three and pitched three shutout innings for a 0-0 score heading to the fourth.
LC broke the tie with three runs in the top of the fourth on a pair of home runs.
Wheeler answered back in the bottom of the inning with a single to right that scored Ty Lindsey for a 3-1 game.
Moya bounced back in the top of the fifth with a shutout inning that led to a Thor two-run double that scored Aleman and Tupper for a 3-3 tie.
The late innings favored the Wildcats yet again with three runs in the sixth and seventh for a 9-3 lead.
Thor sent a solo shot to right field for a 9-4 game, but LC scored five in the top of the eighth for a 14-4 win after eight innings.
Munoz, Thor, and Wheeler each had two hits in the game. Thor led the Lobos with three runs batted in.
Moya took the loss after six innings on the bump. He tallied five strikeouts and walked one.
The Lobos fall to 4-10 on the year and 1-8 in the ASC. LC improves to 13-3 and 9-0.
Sully next travels to Kerrville for a lone game against Schreiner on Wednesday, March 24.
