ALPINE, Texas - Men's hoops sent their seniors off the right way on Thursday with an 88-60 win over visiting Howard Payne.
Julian Paredes got scoring going with a pair of free throws at 19:18 for a 2-0 lead.
Scoring remained within two-points and each side held leads over the first 4:11 before the Yellow Jackets used a quick 4-0 run to lead 11-7 at 15:20.
The Lobos then responded with an 8-0 run to take their own four-point lead at 11:40. Senior
Tristen Licon added the first seven on back-to-back jumpers and a three-pointer before
Carson Perkins finished the run with a free throw.
HPU went back ahead at 9:14 with a 6-1 run but wouldn't lead for long after senior
Jezreel Griffin started an 11-0 run with a jumper for the lead. Paredes then added a triple before Licon had his own three-point play after being fouled on a made jumper and sinking the free throw. Griffin finished the run with a triple at 6:08 for a 27-17 advantage.
The Yellow Jackets stopped that run with a jumper but soon fell behind 17 after Griffin answered with another jumper to start a 9-0 run.
Caelyb Kerley then got the crowd going with a dunk before senior
Jake Lopez sank a jumper. Kerley provided the final points of the run with a three-pointer for a 36-19 lead with 2:53 left before the half.
The second 17-point lead came at 1:10 when senior
Jace Perkins nailed a corner triple for a 39-22 lead.
HPU finished the first half with a 8-3 answer for a 42-30 Sully lead at the break.
The Yellow Jackets opened the second half with the first four to cut their deficit to eight at 18:47.
Griffin had an affinity for starting runs on Thursday, this time sinking a triple at 17:51 to start a 10-0 answer. After a Kerley free throw, Licon drove into the paint and was fouled on a converted layup and sank his free throw for another three-point play. Licon later finished the run with one from beyond the arc for a 52-34 lead with 16:00 left.
Senior
Logan Dixon started the next big answer for the Lobos with a triple at 14:01 to start a 16-0 run.
Omar Boone got into the action with a jumper before Dixon added a free throw and Paredes then sank back-to-back triples.
Carson Perkins added a jumper and
Jace Perkins finished it with his own jumper for a 71-40 lead with 10:15 remaining.
Sully's lead dipped to 22 at 4:31, but the game was never in doubt.
Licon, Griffin, Perkins, Dixon, and Lopez were all subbed out of the game in increments and got their chance to walk off the floor one final time to the applause of the Gallego Center faithful and meet their team on the sideline. The collective five watched their teammates take that 22-point lead and finish on a 10-4 run for an 88-60 final in what was the last regular season game of the season.
