ABILENE, Texas - The Lobos turned a seven-point deficit with three minutes left into a 97-92 win Saturday against the McMurry War Hawks.
Sully got off to a 7-0 start with a triple from
Julian Paredes that was followed by a
Trey Nelson jumper before Paredes finished the run with a jumper.
McMurry slowly chipped away at the early deficit and got within one at 11-10 with 13:46 left in the first half.
Sully's lead stayed in the low single digits until the War Hawks got their first lead of the game at 11:44 with an 18-17 advantage.
Three lead changes followed before the fourth saw McMurry go ahead 26-22 at 8:22.
A 10-2 answer from the Lobos suddenly put them ahead by four with 5:47 left in the first half. It was started with a Paredes jumper before Nelson tied the game with a pair of free throws.
Jezreel Griffin then dialed up a three for the lead. After the War Hawks answered with a layup, Nelson sank a triple for a 32-28 advantage.
The first half saw six lead changes over the final 3:19 with the Lobos taking a 44-42 lead to the half after a late Paredes triple.
Both sides held small single-digit leads in the second half until McMurry broke things open with an 8-0 run for a 75-64 lead with 10:13 left in the game.
Sully was able to get within four with a 7-0 answer over the next 1:44.
Jake Lopez scored the first five of the run with a jumper and a three-pointer before
Caelyb Kerley stepped to the line and hit a pair of free throws for a 75-71 score at 8:29.
The War Hawks immediately upped their lead back to nine with a small 5-0 response with 7:29 left.
Griffin had a response of his own with a pair of layups to cut it to five with 6:15 remaining.
McMurry held at least a five-point lead over the next several minutes before Nelson and Kerley combined for a 7-0 run for an 86-86 tie with 2:13 left.
After the War Hawks went up one with a free throw, Nelson sank a triple for an 89-87 lead at 1:45.
McMurry went back down the floor and tied it on the next possession with a jumper with 1:27 left.
Paredes connected 18 seconds later from beyond the arc for a 92-89 lead with just over a minute remaining.
Similar fortune met the War Hawks back the other way with a triple of their own for a 92-92 score with 50 seconds left.
The Lobos were able to take the lead 16 seconds later with a Paredes layup. After the defense forced a miss, Kerley came up with the rebound and was fouled to send him to the free throw line. After missing the first, Kerley hit the second attempt for a 95-92 advantage.
McMurry had another chance down the floor but could not connect again from three. Kerley again came away with the board and went back to the free throw line after being fouled with three seconds left. Kerley sank both attempts to put the Sully up 97-92 and that's where the score would stay as the Lobos picked up the conference road win.
Kerley finished with a team-high 22 points and tied Nelson and Paredes with a team-best five rebounds.
Griffin came away with a career-high 21 points, adding four assists, and a game-high three steals.
Nelson and Paredes were also in double digits with 17 and 15 points respectively.
The Lobos snap a three-game losing streak to improve to 8-9 on the season and 6-6 in conference play. The War Hawks fall to 4-11 and 4-7.
Sully now prepares for a conference clash with Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday, February 18 in Belton.
