ALPINE, Texas - A big fourth inning in game one and a walk-off in extras from
Jared Lorenz in game two helped propel the Lobos to a doubleheader sweep over University of Dallas.
Facing a winter storm warning and frigid conditions, both sides agreed to a pair of seven-inning games.
Game 1: Lobos 13 - Crusaders 6
The Crusaders got the jump on the Lobos with a pair of runs in the top of the first for a 2-0 lead.
Sully was quick to answer with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.
Carsen Thor first plated
Richard Bailey on a single to right before
Jalen Benton went to left field for a single to score Thor for a 2-2 tie.
Dallas took the lead again in the top of the second with an RBI groundout and took a 4-2 lead with another RBI groundout in the third.
Thor brought his hammer in game one, hitting the first home run of his career in the bottom of the third to make it a one-run game.
The fourth inning was where the Lobos broke it open.
Matthew Wheeler started with an RBI double to right that scored Benton for a 4-4 tie.
Isaac Aleman broke the tie after plating Wheeler on a single to the pitcher for a 5-4 score.
Jared Lorenz later stepped up with the bases loaded and sent a sacrifice fly to right to score
Jett Hartley for a 6-4 game. Lorenz was safe at first on the play as the right fielder could not secure the out.
Thor then singled to right and scored Aleman before
Adrian Munoz was hit by a pitch to plate Bailey for an 8-4 lead.
With the bases still loaded,
Tye Lindsey unloaded them with a grand slam to left field for a 12-4 lead.
Both sides traded runs in the sixth inning and the Crusaders plated one more in the seventh, but the nine-run fourth proved to be the difference in a 13-6 game one win for the Lobos.
Lindsey finished 1-for-3 with five runs batted in.
Thor had an impressive first showing at the plate, going 3-for-3 with four runs scored and 3 RBI.
Starter
Sam Russell picked up the win after throwing 5.2 innings of four strikeout, no walk ball. He surrendered five runs on six hits but only two runs were earned.
Game 2: Lobos 12 - Crusaders 11 (8 innings)
The Lobos jumped out early in game two with a Thor RBI groundout to short to make it 1-0. Later in the inning,
Jorge Marquez scored from third after Lorenz was caught stealing second for a 2-0 lead after one.
Dallas was able to even the score in the top of the second with an RBI double to right and later scored a run on a wild pitch for a 2-2 tie.
Aleman quickly broke the tie in the bottom of the second with an RBI single to right that scored
Tristan Karels.
Thor continued to wreak havoc at the plate, later sending a two-RBI single to center. Aleman and
Peyten Kennard scored on the play for a 5-2 lead after two innings.
The third and fourth innings yielded no runs for either side and it was still a 5-2 lead for Sully heading to the fifth.
The road squad was able to inch closer with an RBI groundout to second in the top of the fifth for a 5-3 game.
Lorenz stepped up with a runner on in the bottom of the fifth and deposited one to left center for a two-run shot. Thor scored on the home run for a 7-3 lead.
Dallas would not stay behind four for long after plating three in the sixth to make it 7-6.
The Lobos quickly upped their lead to three after an RBI single to left by Marquez led way to him later scoring on a error by the second baseman during Thor's at-bat for a 9-6 advantage going to the seventh.
Three outs away from a sweep, the Crusaders did not bow out and were able to plate four in the inning to take a 10-9 lead going bottom seven.
Jacob Ochoa led off the inning and reached on an error by the third baseman to represent the tying run.
Bailey then pinch ran for Ochoa and later reached second base after a wild pitch.
Benton then stepped in and reached first on a fielding error by the shortstop.
Now with runners on first and second, Karels laid down a bunt and reached first safely for a single to load the bases.
Kennard then stepped in and sent a sacrifice fly to center that scored Bailey for a 10-10 tie.
Dallas settled down after that and got the next two batters to send the game to extras.
Tiebreaker rules now start a runner on second base to start extra innings. New pitcher
Justin Holt was able to get the first two batters with the runner from second only moving to third. Holt then surrendered a two-out single to center to put the Crusaders ahead 11-10 going to the bottom of the eighth.
Lindsey was placed on second per extra inning rules.
Marquez led off and grounded out to second to move Lindsey to third with one out. Lindsey then scored on a wild pitch during Thor's at-bat for an 11-11 tie. After Thor flied out to right, Lorenz stepped in already hitting a home run in the game. The junior came up big again, sending this one to left center and gone for a 12-11 walk-off win and sweep of University of Dallas.
Lorenz finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI.
Thor added another three runs batted in to his day with a 2-for-5 showing at the plate.
Holt picked up the win for his first of the season.
Starter
Isaac Gallego threw five innings of six-hit ball. He allowed three runs, all earned, striking out three and walking one.
The Lobos start the season 2-0. The Crusaders start 0-2.
Sully remains home and awaits the start of a three-game series with Southwestern University on Friday at Kokernot Field.
