BROWNWOOD, Texas - Men's hoops led most of each half, but a late surge from Howard Payne handed the Lobos a 67-59 road loss on Thursday night.
First Half
The Lobos got out to an early 10-6 lead that was capped by a pair of triples from
Julian Paredes. They continued to hold the advantage and grew it to as many as 16 after a 17-2 run. Paredes and
Gabe Sanchez each added six before
CJ Jemison added the final five for a 27-11 lead. HPU proceeded to cut it to four with a 12-0 run before Sully finished the first half with the final five for a 32-25 advantage at the half.
Second Half
Howard Payne brought it to one with back-to-back triples and soon tied it at 34-34.
Daveone Bass answered with a triple and was fouled on the shot. His free throw was good for a 38-34 lead that eventually grew to nine after a Sanchez triple and Bass layup. The Yellow Jackets continued to chip away and took their next lead at 47-46. Martinez later tied it 48-48 with a layup, but HPU answered with a 6-0 run. The Lobos cut it to two twice down the stretch but were unable to come back in a 67-59 loss.
Paredes scored 16 points and added a team-high 11 rebounds.
Sanchez was the team's leading scorer with 17.
Sully falls to 4-5 on the season and 2-3 in conference. The Yellow Jackets move to 3-6 and 2-3.
The Lobos continue their season next week in Marshall against East Texas Baptist on Thursday, December 16.
