ALPINE, Texas - Men's hoops was on the wrong side of an 81-76 non-conference loss to Schreiner on Saturday at the Gallego Center.
"It wasn't the outcome we were looking for," said head coach
Xavier Webb. "Schreiner came in with a good game plan and are well-coached. We will to look to improve on the little things as we prepare for life on the road."
First Half
The Lobos held 2-0 and 4-2 leads with layups from
Larry Morrison and
Daveone Bass. Schreiner then retook it and upped it to 14-7 before Sully came back with a 7-0 run.
Trey Nelson added the first bucket with a jumper.
Logan Dixon then scored the next five for a 14-14 tie. Sully's next lead came on a three-pointer for a 17-16 advantage around the midway point of the first half. The Lobos took their largest lead of the half with back-to-back buckets from Bass and Nelson for a 28-24 advantage. The Mountaineers eventually took the lead back at 32-31 and took a 41-36 advantage to the break.
Second Half
Schreiner continued to hold the lead until a 6-0 Sully run made it 44-44. Their next lead came at 51-50 on a triple from Sanchez. The game remained tight with it being tied or the Mountaineers holding a slim lead until they eventually upped it to 66-59 with just over five minutes left. Later down nine, Sanchez knocked down another three before Nelson netted a layup.
Mitchell Martinez then cut it to 70-67 with a free throw. Dixon later came to the line down four and sank a pair of free throws for a 77-75 Schreiner lead with just over a minute left. The Mountaineers finished the final minute with four of the last six for a 81-76 win over the Lobos.
Dixon scored a game-high 27 on 9-of-15 shooting. He added four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Nelson finished with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting.
Sanchez was also in double digits with 12 points and three rebounds.
The Lobos fall to 2-2 on the season. Schreiner improves to 2-4.
Sully next travels to Seguin on Wednesday for a non-conference clash with Texas Lutheran.
