CLARKSVILLE, Arkansas - Men's basketball erased a 12-point second half deficit for a late lead but ultimately fell 71-70 in the final seconds to University of the Ozarks on Thursday.
Sully got out to an 8-2 lead out of the gate on three free throws from
Jake Lopez and five points from
Julian Paredes on a triple and a jumper just 1:35 into the contest.
Ozarks tied the game a number of times before a 6-0 run put the Lobos ahead 23-17 at 10:42.
Trey Nelson started with a jumper before
Caelyb Kerley and
Tristen Licon added a dunk and jumper respectively.
The Eagles answered with a 6-0 run of their own for a 23-23 tie at 5:47.
Five more lead changes ensued in the first half before Ozarks finished with the final four points for a 37-33 lead at the break.
The Eagles opened the second half with a layup for a six-point lead.
Paredes and
Logan Dixon accounted for the next four with a jumper and a layup to trim it to two with 17:04 left.
Ozarks quickly grew their lead again with five unanswered for a 44-37 advantage at 16:18.
The Eagles held at least a five-point lead and upped it to as many as 12 at 11:52.
Sully's offense found life over the next 1:43 with an 11-0 run to trail 53-52 at 10:09. Both Nelson and
Jezreel Griffin were fouled on made layups and converted their free throws for the first six of the run. Kerley later hit a layup and Licon finished with a triple to trail by one.
Ozarks continued to hold the lead and eventually went ahead by nine at 5:32 as part of a 7-0 run.
Down seven with 3:25, Licon sank a jumper before a Kerley three-pointer to cut it to two. Licon was then fouled the next time down the floor on a layup attempt. The bucket was good and he stepped to the line and took a 68-67 lead on the make with 1:42 left.
The Eagles were fouled their next possession and sank both free throws for a 69-68 lead with 1:29 remaining.
After a Sully miss,
Trey Nelson stole the ball under his own basket and converted a layup for a 70-69 lead with 14 seconds left.
Ozarks' Byron Johnson converted a layup for a 71-70 lead and was fouled on the make with 10.7 on the clock. He missed the free throw to give the Lobos the possession down one. Paredes could not connect on the three and Kerley came up with the rebound but could not convert a short jumper as the Lobos fell 71-70 to the Eagles.
Licon finished the game with a game-high 25 points on 10-of-19 shooting and added four rebounds.
Nelson finished with 13 points on 4-of-7 from the floor and 5-of-5 from the free throw line.
Sully falls to 6-6 on the season and 4-3 in ASC play. Ozarks improves to 1-1 and 1-1.
The Lobos next travel to Richardson for a 1:00 p.m. tip against UT Dallas.
