Lobos hang tough against UT Dallas in 85-77 win #SRSU | #ASChoops | #d3hoops

RICHARDSON, Texas - After another close one-point loss against University of the Ozarks on Thursday, the Lobos outlasted UT Dallas Saturday in an 85-77 road win.

It ended up being a slow start for both clubs to find the bottom of the net until UT Dallas first crossed the double-digit threshold at 11 with 13:28 to go in the first half.

The Lobos held up defensively and on the glass in order to find their rhythm. A steal followed up by a three-pointer by Caelyb Kerley tied it up at 11 and the Lobos kept their foot on the gas.

The Comets were nipping at their heels the rest of the way. They managed to reclaim a small two-point lead off a three-pointer.

Sul Ross closed out the half strong off with a jumper from Julian Paredes with five seconds to go to send the Lobos into the half with a 41-36 lead.

The Comets kept it close in the second half, but the Lobos never surrendered their first half lead for the remainder of the game.

They were led by a highly efficient night from Julian Paredes. He went 8-of-9 from the floor including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc for a 21-point showing with four rebounds.

While the Comets were able to stay within striking distance, the Lobos kept pouring it on. They edged the Comets in points off of turnovers 24 to 19. They were able to wear down their opponent as the second half came to a close, despite allowing 13 second chance points, and grew the lead to 10 on more than one occasion which ultimately gave them enough cushion to close the game out.

Tristen Licon continues his climb toward the #1 spot on the all-time scoring record with a stout 19 points and eight rebounds. Jezreel Griffin poured in a vital 15 points to help put the Comets away.

The Lobos finished the day with four players in double figures. A strong presence at the three-point line clipping at 50% in the first and a consistent presence at the free throw line throughout the game helped the Lobos close out the Comets down the stretch.

All in all this was close contest. The benches and especially play on the fast break favored Sul Ross which really determined the game.

This brings their record to 7-6 overall and 5-3 in conference play.

Sully has a short break until they face Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday, February 4 with a 7:30 p.m. tip at the Gallego Center.
