ALPINE, Texas -
Tristen Licon passed former teammate
Caleb Thomasson on Saturday to become the #2 all-time leading scorer in Sul Ross history in a 73-57 home win over McMurry.
Licon came in 19 points shy and put up 20 for the game to leapfrog Thomasson and sit at 1437 career points.
The milestone basket came off a steal and layup with 9:51 left in the second half.
Licon now finds himself 288 points behind Sidney Hooper's all-time record of 1725.
The El Paso native's game-high 20 came with a team-high eight rebounds and game-best four steals.
McMurry started the game with the first four points that prompted a quick Sully timeout.
The Lobos offense flourished out of the timeout with a 12-0 run. Lopez started with a layup before Licon got on the board with a jumper.
Deveraux Minix added the next five with a jumper and a three-pointer and
Julian Paredes finished the run with a triple of his own for a 12-4 lead.
Sully didn't wait long for another long run following a War Hawks jumper. Licon's answer with a jumper sparked an 11-0 response.
Caelyb Kerley hit back-to-back triples before
Carson Perkins connected from downtown to cap it for a 23-8 lead with just over nine minutes left.
The Lobos offense kept rolling and eventually led by 21 on another Perkins triple around the six minute mark. They kept it going throughout the remainder of the first half and took a 26-point lead to halftime on a Minix layup for a 45-19 score.
Sully was quick out of the gate in the second half and took their lead to 31 on a pair of free throws from
Logan Dixon early in the period as part of a 7-1 run.
Their advantage would later expand to a game-high 33 points after a Kerley jumper with still over 14 minutes remaining.
McMurry was able to chip away at the large deficit and got it town to 16 with over six minutes left in the second half.
Paredes didn't let that score last long with an 8-0 run of his own on a pair of triples and a layup for a 69-45 score.
The closest the War Hawks came again was 14 in the final minute of the game before
Gabe Sanchez scored his first career points at home to seal the 73-57 win.
Paredes finished with 13 points and six rebounds.
Perkins shot 3-4 from beyond the arc to provide 11 points.
The Lobos improve to 5-5 on the season and 3-2 in conference play. McMurry drops to 1-7 and 1-3.
Sully looks to keep things rolling at home next Thursday with a clash against East Texas Baptist at the Gallego Center.
