Licon again sets new career-high in whirlwind 105-98 victory over Tornados #SRSU | #BrandEm | #ASChoops

AUSTIN- Tristen Licon's career-high 33-point performance against UMHB lasted all of one game as the junior guard finished with a new career-best 34 in a 105-98 win over Concordia.

Licon played a game-high 38 minutes in the 34-point, nine-rebound night. He added three assists, three steals, shot 11-of-15 from the field, 4-of-4 from beyond the arc, and 8-of-8 from the free throw line.

The El Paso native moved to number five on Sul Ross' All-Time Scoring List with 1,086 career points. He passed Jimmy Martinez (1,073) and Jorge Quintero (1,082) during the game.

Sully also clinched a share of the ASC West title with the victory. They can clinch sole ownership with either a win or a Concordia loss over the teams' final four games.

The Lobos got out to an early 2-0 lead on a Cailen Bond layup 1:12 into the contest.

The Tornados quickly flipped the script with a 10-0 run over the next 2:33 to lead by eight at 16:15.

Sully cut it to five on three different occasions over the next 2:05 but went on to trail by as many as 20 after a 19-4 run put Concordia ahead 34-14 with 6:50 left in the first half.

The Lobos twice narrowed the deficit to 11 but settled on trailing 54-41 at the break.

Sully came out shooting in the second half with a 16-3 run for a 57-57 tie at the first media timeout. Jezreel Griffin and Tristen Licon started the run with back-to-back layups to cut it to single digits. B.J. Hollis was then fouled on a made layup and sank his free throw for a three-point play. The Tornados answered with a three-point play of their own after being fouled on a layup to go back up nine. After Cole Avery hit the first of his two free throws, Hollis later stepped to the line and knocked down two. Licon and Griffin finished the run with triples for the 57-57 tie at 16:12.

The Lobos took their first lead of the second half at 14:40 as an Avery triple made it 60-59.

Tied 60-60, another Avery free throw put the Lobos back ahead before a Licon layup gave Sully a three-point lead at 12:41.

The Lobos held a slim lead until three Concordia free throws put them back up 75-74 with 8:33 left.

Three lead changes ensued with Jake Lopez putting Sully ahead 79-77 on a layup at 6:57.

After a Tornado jumper tied the game, Avery nailed another triple for an 82-79 lead with 6:20 remaining.

Avery had the hot hand as he later put the Lobos up four with a three-point play on a layup and free throw after the foul for an 85-81 lead at 5:36.

Concordia quickly reacted with four unanswered in the next 41 seconds to lead 86-85, but Julian Paredes nailed a three-pointer to go ahead 88-86 with 4:39 left.

Licon soon put Sully up four again on a triple with 4:02 left for a 91-87 score.

The Tornados made it a one-point game three times over the next 2:12 until a Griffin layup and a pair of Licon free throws put the Lobos ahead 101-96 with 58 seconds left.

Concordia's last gasp came on a layup with 50 seconds left to make it a three-point game.

Licon and Hollis later stepped to the line to ice the game and each sank their two free throws to finish off the Tornados in the 105-98 triumph.

Hollis fell one point short of matching his season-best as he finished with 24 points on 7-of-14 shooting and 7-of-7 from the free throw line.

Avery was a rebound shy of a double-double with 9 boards to go with 10 points.

The Lobos move to 13-8 on the season, 9-2 in conference, and are winners of their last five. Concordia sits at 11-10 and 6-6.

Sully heads back to Gallego Center for the remainder of the season and will next host McMurry for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff this Thursday.
