ALPINE- Men's basketball clinched its third ASC West title in five years after a 105-73 wire-to-wire victory over McMurry at the Gallego Center on Thursday.
Four Lobos scored in double digits with
Tristen Licon providing a game-high 27 to go with seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
Sully clinched the ASC West division with the victory and will host the ASC Tournament after the completion of the regular season. The tournament is scheduled for February 27-29 at the Gallego Center.
Sully started the game on a 5-0 run as Licon converted a layup,
Jake Lopez hit the first of two free throw attempts, and
Cailen Bond finished with a layup for a 5-0 lead not even two minutes in.
Licon soon drained back-to-back triples for his own 6-2 run to lead 11-4 just 1:11 later.
The War Hawks were able to cut the deficit to 15-11, but the Lobos came back with a 9-2 answer for their first double-digit lead.
Cailen Bond finished the run with a triple for a 24-13 advantage at 10:36. Licon and Lopez also added three-pointers during the streak.
Sully's lead dipped into single digits only once the rest of the first half and they led by as many as 16 with 1:33 before the break. McMurry finished first half scoring with a triple to trail 45-32 heading to the second half.
The Lobo lead ballooned to 20 after a 7-0 start to the second. Griffin started with a layup before Licon nailed a three and Hollis finished with a layup for a 52-32 lead at 17:28.
The War Hawks were able to stop Sully's run with a layup, but the Lobos went on another 7-0 run to go ahead 25 with 14:38 remaining. Hollis added six with a pair of layups and a jumper.
Sully held at least a 21-point lead until a 17-5 run extended the advantage to 33 at 10:44. Bond sank a pair of triples,
Logan Dixon added five, and the Lobos shot 6-for-6 from the free throw line during the run to lead 80-47.
The closest McMurry came again was 27 at 8:08 and trailed by as many as 35 with 3:54 left. The game proved to be never in doubt in the second half as Sully outscored the War Hawks 60-41 in the 105-73 win.
Hollis finished with 14 points, six rebounds, and three steals.
Dixon also had 14 and Bond added 11 with seven rebounds.
The Lobos improve to 14-8 on the season,11-2 in ASC play, and extend their winning streak to six games. The War Hawks fall to 7-15 and 4-9
Sully now prepares for a visit from Hardin-Simmons with a 3:00 p.m. tip against the Cowboys this Saturday at the Gallego Center.
