MARSHALL, Texas - The Lobos went toe-to-toe with ETBU in the first half Thursday, but an 18-0 second half run spelled doom as the Tigers prevailed for an 80-64 win in Sully's season opener.
The Lobos took their first lead of the game on a
Logan Dixon layup before a
Julian Paredes offensive rebound and putback the next time down the floor gave the Lobos a 5-2 lead at 17:32.
Paredes had the next answer for Sully with a triple at 16:24 for an 8-5 lead that quickly diminished after a 6-0 run by the Tigers finished at 14:25.
Each side traded small leads before an 11-1 Lobos run put them ahead 25-18 with 10:01 left in the first half. Transfer junior
Caelyb Kerley added seven points with two triples and a free throw during the run.
The Tigers clawed back to within one before another Kerley triple put the Lobos ahead 28-24 at 6:52.
Both sides exchanged slight leads down the stretch of the first half before a Dixon jumper with 45 seconds left tied things for a 39-39 score at the break.
ETBU started early in the second half, jumping out to as much as a six-point lead over the first five minutes. Sully was able to keep the deficit there and brought it back to one on a Kerley 5-0 run to trail 51-50 with 13:38 remaining.
The Tigers were quick to bounce back with an 18-0 run over the next 4:45 for a 69-50 lead with 8:53 left.
ETBU's lead would reach a high 22 down the stretch before settling on an 80-64 win over the Lobos.
Kerley shined in his first game, leading both sides with a game-high 21 points on 6-11 shooting and 5-8 from beyond the arc. He also added five rebounds.
Dixon and Paredes were both in double-digits, scoring 15 and 13 respectively.
Tristen Licon finished with eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Sully starts the season 0-1 as the Tigers improve to 3-0.
The Lobos now travel to Abilene next Friday, November 27 for an ASC non-conference clash with McMurray.
