ALPINE- Sul Ross overcame a small deficit early, took the lead and never gave it up in an 85-64 ASC victory Thursday over Louisiana College at the Gallego Center.
The Wildcats scored the first six of the game.
B.J. Hollis then drained a three to put the Lobos on the board.
LC's lead extended to 12-5 before Sully used a 14-2 run to take their first lead and extend it to five.
Aldon Johnson started the run with a three-point play of a layup and free throw after being fouled.
Tristen Licon tallied the next five with a triple and layup to cut it to one before
Jezreel Griffin's three-pointer gave the Lobos their first lead, 16-14.
Logan Dixon ended the run with a jumper for a 19-14 lead at the 14:28 mark of the first.
Sul Ross took their first double-digit lead at 10:42 on a Dixon layup for a 30-20 score. Dixon followed that up with a three-pointer and a layup for his own 5-0 run and a 35-25 advantage.
The Lobos largest lead of the half came after Johnson made one of his two free throws at 6:40 for a 39-22 lead
The Wildcats were able to trim Sully's lead to 41-35 with 2:36 left on a 13-2 run. The Lobos answered with the final four of the half on a Licon three and Dixon free throw for a 45-35 score at the break.
Sully started the second half on a 7-0 run with five from Licon and two from Dixon for a 52-35 advantage with 15:40 left.
A 10-2 LC run brought it back to single-digits at 12:20.
The Lobos responded with a 17-5 run to take a 21-point lead with 8:13 remaining.
Julian Paredes hit three triples during the run and shot 4-4 from beyond the arc on the night.
After the Wildcats cut it to 16 at 5:30, Sully answered with a 6-0 run. Licon,
Brayden Fry, and
Tyshaun Huey hit jumpers on consecutive possessions for the largest Lobos lead of the game, 22.
Sully's lead would never dwindle to fewer than 17 down the stretch as they moved to 2-0 in conference play with an 85-64 win.
Dixon finished the game with a game-high 22 points. He added eight rebounds.
Licon totaled a game-high 11 rebounds and 16 points.
Paredes and Johnson also scored in double-digits with 12 and 11 respectively.
The Lobos moved to within a game of .500 at 5-6 on the season and 2-0 in ASC play. Louisiana College falls to 6-4 and 0-1.
Sully now prepares for Belhaven University this Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the Gallego Center.
