Tristen Licon continued his incredible Sul Ross career Saturday by joining the 1000-point club in an 84-78 win over University of the Ozarks at the Gallego Center.
The El Paso native notched career point 1,000 at the 11:22 mark of the second half on a finger roll.
Licon got the offense started early for the Lobos with a jumper to tie the game 2-2.
B.J. Hollis gave Sully their first lead two possessions later on a triple for a 5-4 advantage.
The game saw four more lead changes with the Lobos taking a 14-13 lead on a
Cailen Bond three-pointer at 13:43. That was the start of a 9-0 run as Hollis and
Jezreel Griffin hit back-to-back triples for a 20-13 lead at 12:35.
Ozarks responded with a pair of jumpers to cut it to three. They'd eventually get to within two but Sully answered with a 7-1 run. Griffin started and finished the run with a jumper for 34-26 lead with 3:25 left in the first half.
The Lobos held at least a five-point lead until the Eagles hit a three at the buzzer for a 42-38 Sully lead at the break.
Hollis started second half scoring at 18:45 with a jumper to go back up six. Still up six, Ozarks cut that in half with a triple, but Licon and Hollis answered with threes of their own to go up 52-43 with 16:26 left.
Bond gave the Lobos a 10-point lead on a jumper and eventually extended it to 12 on a triple as part of a 12-5 run for a 64-52 advantage at 13:19.
The Eagles twice cut it to 10, but Hollis answered with a jumper and Licon with points 999 and 1,000 to keep the lead at 12 with 11:22 left.
Ozarks scored the next six to cut their deficit in half, but Licon added a three-point play on a jumper and free throw after the foul for a nine-point lead at 9:05.
The Eagles spent the next 9:01 outscoring the Lobos 14-7 to trail 78-76 with 1:04 left.
Sully shot 87% from the free throw line in the game and lived up to that in the final minute. Licon,
Jake Lopez, and Bond each hit their two attempts down the stretch to get the Lobos over the finish line in the 84-78 win.
Hollis finished tied for a game-high 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.
Licon ended his special afternoon with 21 points, four rebounds, and three assists.
Bond was also in double figures with 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for a double-double. Griffin had 12 points and three rebounds.
The Lobos improve to 10-8 on the season and an ASC West best 7-2 in conference play. Ozarks falls to 6-12 and 2-7.
Sully will next play Saturday, February 1 when Howard Payne comes to the Gallego Center to continue conference play.
