Bond and Licon shine in thrilling 68-65 win over Comets #SRSU | #BrandEm | #ASChoops

ALPINE- Junior Cailen Bond left the Gallego Center Thursday having put up the best performance of his Sul Ross career in a 68-65 classic over UT Dallas.

Bond's 22-point performance marks a new career-high. His previous best was 12 points in a 112-106 win over Pacific University on November 23.

The Comets started the game on a 6-0 run and later led 11-5 with 16:23 left in the first half.

Cailen Bond and Jake Lopez answered with back-to-back triples for an 11-11 score at 14:29.

UT Dallas grew their lead twice more to four until Tristen Licon knocked down a three followed by a Dixon free throw for a 17-17 tie at the 8:53 mark.

The pattern of Comet leads and Sully ties continued throughout the first half. UTD led 22-17 at 6:19, Julian Paredes and Licon tied it 22-22 on a triple and jumper respectively at 5:16. The Comets then went ahead 30-24 at 2:36 before Bond and Licon tied the game on back-to-back threes with 54 seconds left in the half.

UTD made the final bucket of the first half to lead 32-30 at the break.

The Lobos took their first lead of the game as Licon's triple started second half scoring. Bond added another three-pointer their next time down the floor for a 36-32 lead at 18:36.

The Comets responded with a 9-0 run for a 41-36 advantage and expanded their lead to six before Sully used their own 9-1 run to take a 51-46 lead. Bond started the run with a three-point play after sinking his free throw after being fouled on a made layup. Paredes then tied things up on their next possession with another triple. Bond then drove coast to coast after a rebound, flipped it to Dixon, who passed it back as Bond tipped the ball up and was fouled on the make. He sank his free throw for another successful three-point play. Bond then followed up his great play with another triple for a six point lead at 8:57.

The Lobos would only hold the lead for a few minutes as a 5-0 Comet run tied things 53-53 with 6:13 left.

Sully took another small two-point lead on a Lopez jumper before UTD tied the game again at 55-55 with 5:23 remaining,

This game proved to be a game of quick scoring spurts as B.J. Hollis sank two free throws followed by a Licon triple for a 60-55 lead at the 4:13 mark.

Sully's defense clamped down over the next 3:54 to keep at least a three-point lead until Licon's layup with 19 seconds left put the Lobos up 66-59.

Bond hit two free throws down the stretch as Sully prevailed for the 68-65 win in a game that didn't see a lead of more than seven in its entirety.

Bond led the Lobos with a team-high 22 points and tied Hollis and Licon for a team-high five rebounds. He shot 7-of-11 from the floor, 4-of-7 from three, and 4-of-4 from the free throw line.

Licon ended his night with 21 points, five rebounds, and four assists. The junior shot 8-of-13 from the floor and 5-of-8 from beyond the arc.

Sully shot 42.9% as a team and 54.2% in the second half. They converted 13-of-33 three-point attempts and 7-of-9 from the free throw line.

The Lobos improve to 9-8 on the year and 6-2 in conference play. UT Dallas falls to 12-5 and 6-2.

Sully continues their season at the Gallego Center Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. tipoff against University of the Ozarks.
