LONGVIEW- Sul Ross' perfect start to the conference season came to an end Thursday after an 85-79 loss to LeTourneau.
Trailing 3-0 early, Sully scored the next six on two layups from
Tristen Licon and a jumper from
Jake Lopez for a 6-3 lead at the 17:30 mark.
Tied 8-8, a 12-4 Lobo run tied their largest lead of the first half. Licon started the run with a layup to retake the lead.
Logan Dixon added the next five for Sully with a triple and a jumper for a 15-10 lead.
Cole Avery and
B.J. Hollis finished the run with a jumper and a three-pointer respectively for a 20-12 lead at 10:38.
The Lobos held at least a five-point lead until Licon's triple at 6:49 put them ahead 25-17.
LETU answered with a 14-6 run to tie the game 31-31 with 1:54 left in the first half.
Tied 33-33,
Jezreel Griffin supplied the final five for Sully as they ended the half on a 5-2 run for a 38-35 lead at the break.
The second half saw nine lead changes over the first 5:28 with the YellowJackets leading 52-50 at 14:32. The largest lead for the Lobos during the back and forth was two points and only three for LETU.
The YellowJackets took control over the next 5:20 with a 16-5 run to lead 68-55 with just over nine minutes left in regulation.
Licon cut it to 10 with a triple.
Cailen Bond was later fouled on a made jumper and sank the free throw to make it a seven-point game with 8:11 left. Scoring didn't resume until Hollis sank the backend of his two free throws over two minutes later for a 68-52 LETU lead at 5:52.
Sully inched closer on a Dixon layup and foul to cut it to 72-68 after the resulting free throw at 2:44.
Dixon again trimmed it to four at 2:11, but the YellowJackets outscored the Lobos 11-9 down the stretch to hand Sully its first conference loss, 85-79.
Dixon led the way with a team-high 27 points. He added five boards and shot 12-14 from the free throw line.
Licon finished with 24 points, six rebounds, and three assists.
Hollis ended with a game-high 12 rebounds and
Brayden Fry finished with a team-high five assists.
The loss puts the Lobos at 8-7 on the season and 5-1 in ASC play. LETU improves to 10-4 and 3-2.
Sully remains on the road Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. meeting with East Texas Baptist in Marshall.
