Quotes from Coach John Pearce

Overall thoughts on season and home opener
It was a tough day for the Lobos. We got beat upfront, didn't tackle well early, but the defense did cause three turnovers. I thought our special teams and punt team played really well, coverage was good there. Our opening kickoff we had good coverage. During camp you never play those units live. We played a great team. Hardin-Simmons, they're ninth right now in the country and they're going to move up higher in the polls for sure. I think it was a big eye-opener to our players being young guys. I think Hardin-Simmons only traveled 10 freshmen and we probably played 30 freshmen throughout the whole night. I think it's a good learning experience, unfortunately it is a conference game, but I love playing them and the other purple and gold school, so it's a good challenge.

On what the message to the team was after the game
I told them on Sunday if it was a one-point loss or a 64-point loss I still feel bad. I'm not happy with that, but one game doesn't determine our season. We just got to keep moving forward, keep grinding and try and improve.

Strategy to bounce back this week
We got a tough one again playing Division II school Texas A&M Kingsville. They're talented, especially at the skill positions, so it's going to be a big challenge. It's kind of like our Super Bowl. You get to play a team that a lot of these guys probably thought they should have gone Division II, for whatever reason didn't happen. So, they get to play in a higher level, get that exposure. Just be excited about it, it is what it is.

Expectations going in to A&M Kingsville
Every game, win the football game, but we just got to improve. We got to find a little bit of a running game. Hopefully our receivers can catch the ball. Get better, consistent play out of our quarterback. Hopefully we improve on our tackling on defense and don't give up a deep ball.

On a possible change at quarterback this week
Nah, both guys will play (Barrera and Johns). That's our message, even with my staff. I said we've got to find our best 22 players and just keep rotating guys in. Whoever gets consistent, gets hot then that's who we'll go with.

On scouting A&M Kingsville
They're good. Like I said, they got a lot of talented receivers. The games going to be faster. Their o-line and d-line are physical just like Hardin-Simmons, so we got our hands full for sure.
