SAN ANTONIO- Sul Ross led early and often in the first half, but Trinity mounted a second half comeback for a 92-90 overtime win over the Lobos Monday.
The Lobos broke out for five of the first seven points and used that for an extended 14-6 run to start the game.
Cole Avery accounted for nine points during the run with three makes from beyond the arc.
The Tigers responded with a 13-5 run to tie things 19-19 with 11:05 left in the first half.
Sully immediately retook the lead and eventually went up by five on a three-pointer from
Logan Dixon to go ahead 32-27 at the 4:12 mark.
Trinity came within three the next possession before the Lobos went on a 12-4 run. Avery added another four and
Cailen Bond ended the run with a dunk to take a 44-33 lead with 46 seconds left in the first.
The Tigers scored the final five of the half for a 44-38 Sully lead at the break.
Giles Gilliam's steal led to an Avery bucket and the foul to send him to the line for a three-point play to start second half scoring. Avery hit the free throw for a 47-38 lead.
Trinity responded with a 12-0 run for their first lead of the game, 49-47, with 17:56 remaining.
A quick 5-0 run put the Lobos back up five when
Logan Dixon knocked down a three followed by back-to-back layups by Bond and
Tristen Licon.
The Tigers crept back to within one before
B.J. Hollis nailed a three for a 57-54 lead with 14:10 left.
Sully then amassed a 10-2 run that saw five each from Bond and Dixon to put the Lobos up 67-55 at the 10:53 mark.
Trinity responded with a 5-0 run, but Dixon responded with two free throws and Avery nailed another three for a 5-0 answer and a 72-60 lead with just under eight minutes left.
The Tigers used the next 5:56 for a 15-3 run to tie the game 75-75 with 2:02 remaining.
Sully broke a 77-77 tie with a Licon jumper at 41 seconds. Gilliam then made one of two free throw attempts to lead 80-77 with 24 seconds left.
Trinity was able to knock down a three-pointer with three seconds remaining to send the game to overtime tied 80-80.
The Tigers scored five of the first seven of the extra period for an 87-82 lead with 3:05 left.
Dixon answered the run with a layup to cut the deficit to three. Gilliam then hit two free throws next time down the floor to make it a one point game. After a Trinity layup, Dixon drove to the hoop and scored as he was fouled. He hit the resulting free throw for an 89-89 tie with 40 seconds remaining.
After a made free throw by the Tigers, Dixon went to the line and hit the backend of his two attempts for a 90-90 score with 18 seconds left.
Trinity bled the clock and made a game-winning shot with one second left for a 92-90 win in overtime.
Dixon finished the night with a career-high 32 points on 8-15 shooting and 13-15 from the free throw line. He also added five rebounds.
Avery matched a career-high 21.
Bond led the team in rebounds with 10, adding nine points and three blocks.
The Lobos record stands at 3-3 on the season. The Tigers improve to 2-4.
