FOREST GROVE, Oregon-
Brayden Fry came into Saturday's game against Pacific University with a single-game high of 17 points in his career. The sophomore broke that mark with 20 points in the first half and 36 for the game in a 112-106 victory for their first win of the season.
The Boxers got off to a hot start and held an early 7-2 lead with 17:35 left in the first half.
Sully found themselves down until
Brayden Fry put back a rebound and was fouled to go to the line. He hit the free throw and tied things 12-12 with 15:19 left.
The Lobos were down 12-6 before Fry tied the game 12-12 on a layup. They went on to score seven more with a layup from
B.J. Hollis, a three from
Conner Dawson, and another Fry layup to finish a 13-0 run for a 19-12 lead with 14:23 left.
Pacific crept to within two at 21-19 before Sully went on a 7-0 run on a
Julian Paredes three,
Tristen Licon layup, and Fry free throw for a 27-19 lead with 10:39 left in the first.
Up 34-29, Fry took control by scoring 10 of the next 12 to put the Lobos up 46-34 with 4:13 left in the first.
Sully's largest first half lead was 14 with 2:48 left off a layup by
Giles Gilliam.
The Boxers shrank the deficit to seven with 43 seconds left, but Hollis scored the final five points of the half for a 59-47 lead at the break.
Fry finished the first half with a game-high 20 points.
Sul Ross opened the second half with six unanswered on back-to-back-to-back layups by Licon, Gilliam, and Fry for a 65-47 lead.
Fry continued to shine as he hit a jumper and layup to start a 9-0 run.
Cailen Bond's layup and three free throws from Licon were the backend of the run as the Lobos lead rose to 78-55 with 13:45 remaining.
Pacific attempted to chip away at the lead but couldn't get within more than 15 over the next six minutes until an 8-0 run brought it to nine with 6:43 left.
Dawson and Licon answered with a quick 5-0 run to put Sully at the century mark for the first time this season for a 100-86 lead at the 5:51 mark.
The Boxers made it a game late as they cut the Lobos lead from 14 to three over the next four minutes to trail 109-106 with 1:38 left.
Pacific was forced to foul down the stretch and Sully knocked down three of their final four free throws to hang on for the 112-106 win.
Fry finished with a career-high 36 points on 15-16 shooting. He also added a team-high eight rebounds. His previous high point total for a game was 17 against McMurry on February 9, 2019.
Four other Lobos were in double-digits for the game. Licon finished with 19 points, a game-high seven assists, and four rebounds. Hollis shot 5-7 from the floor and 2-4 from beyond the arc to add 14 points and four rebounds. Gilliam's scoring came mostly from the free throw line as he shot 8-10 from the charity stripe and finished with 12 points. Bond added 12 points off the bench after shooting 6-8 from the field.
Sully's 66% field goal percentage is the best single-game mark for a
Clif Carroll coached team. The previous record was 65% in a 94-91 win over Concordia on February 13, 2016.
The win is the first of the season and moves the Lobos to 1-2. The Boxers fall to 2-3.
Sul Ross next travels to Colorado Springs, Colorado this Friday, November 29 for a 8:30 p.m. clash with Colorado College.
