ALPINE, Texas- A walk-off single by
Guillermo Loera scored
Ryan Almager in extra innings for a 4-3 Lobo victory over visiting Howard Payne in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.
Despite a five-run Sul Ross attack in the seventh of game two, the Yellow Jackets held on and defeated the Lobos, 10-8 to win the three-game series, 2-1.
A solo home run by
Monty Maley in the second inning put the first run on the board for either team in game one.
A sacrifice fly in the third by
Joseph Sanchez scored
Wesley Moss, unearned, for a 2-0 Lobo advantage.
Howard Payne then tied the outing with a run scored in the fifth and sixth before Almager's double in the bottom of the sixth scored Sanchez for a 3-2 lead.
The visitors knotted the game again with a run scored in the seventh which eventually led to an extra inning of play.
Following a scoreless top of the eighth, Almager led off the bottom of the inning with a double.
That set the stage for Loera's walk-off single that brought Almager across for the 4-3 Sul Ross win.
Reliever
Peyton Marett improved to 3-0 on the season after two complete innings.
In game two, Howard Payne brought five unanswered runs across in the first two innings.
Almager then homered in the third scoring Sanchez and narrowed the Lobo deficit to three.
The Yellow Jackets brought three insurance runs across in the fifth and sixth before a sacrifice fly by
Jonathon Bigley scored Moss in the bottom of the sixth.
Howard Payne then stretched its lead to six in the top of the seventh.
With two outs in the bottom of the frame,
Jonathon Bigley smashed his first season grand slam scoring Almager, Moss and Sanchez.
The Yellow Jackets were able to fend off the Lobo rally and ended the game on a strikeout for the 10-8 victory.
Starter
Justin Haros shouldered the loss after three complete innings.
With the series loss to Howard Payne, Sul Ross drops to 20-17 on the season and 14-7 in conference play while the Yellow Jackets improve to 20-16 and 9-13.
The Lobos will wrap up regular season play against visiting Mary Hardin-Baylor April 27 and 28.
