BROWNWOOD-
Caleb Thomasson posted 26 points and seven rebounds to lead the Sul Ross State University Lobos to a 91-73 bruising of Howard Payne University Saturday in Brownwood.
Sul Ross needs two more wins to clinch the American Southwest Conference West Division crown for the second time in three seasons. Sully closes out the regular road season next Thursday and Saturday at Hardin-Simmons and McMurry.
In Saturday's contest against the Yellow Jackets, a layup by
Tristen Licon gave Sul Ross a 14-5 lead with 13:44 left in the first half.
Howard Payne kept the outing close and pulled to within one at the 8:18 mark off a scoop shot by Thomas Bingham.
The Lobos broke into a pair of double digit leads in the closing seconds off of a free throw by
Brock Anders and a jumper in the paint by
C.J. Ross for a 44-34 Sul Ross lead at the break.
Sully mounted a 9-0 run to start the second period as another layup by Licon at the 15:26 mark gave the Pack a 56-34 lead.
The visitors never lost their grip the rest of the outing as
Conner Dawson sealed the victory with two foul shots in the final two seconds of the game for the 91-73 win.
Ross and
B.J. Hollis posted 16 points each while Licon supplied 14.
Stephen Walker added a team-high six assists.
The Lobos finished with another impressive showing from the floor at 31-of-61 shooting at 51 percent including a 14-of-27 performance in the first half.
Sul Ross improves to 16-5 on the season and 11-2 in ASC play. Howard Payne falls to 8-13 and 4-9.
Thursday's tip against the Cowboys is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
