ALPINE, Texas- Freshman guard
Tristen Licon paced the offense with 18 points as the Sul Ross State University Lobos defeated Concordia in an 84-73 ASC decision Saturday.
The Lobos wrap up the regular season at 19-6, 14-3 in conference competition and represent the No. 1 seed in the ASC West with the right to host this year's conference championship tournament. The Tornados finish at 15-10 and 9-8 and will represent the No. 3 seed in the Conference West heading into next week's tournament.
Sully will tangle with U.T. Tyler at 7:30 Thursday evening in the opening round at the Gallego Center. The Patriots represent the No. 4 seed from the ASC East.
This year's regular season record also ties the 2003-04 Sweet 16 team for most wins since Sul Ross joined the NCAA ranks in 1996.
Against the Tornados, Sul Ross started the contest with a 4-0 run ending with two free throws by
Jola Otubu nearly a minute into the opening half.
A jumper by Concordia's Charles Johnson broke a 7-7 tie before the Pack grabbed the go ahead off a triple by Otubu at the 14:09 mark for a 12-11 Sul Ross lead.
B.J. Hollis then converted a fast break dunk at 9:09 extending the home team's lead to six.
Otubu drained another three-point basket giving Sully a nine-point, 35-26 lead with 6:06 remaining before the half.
Hollis then banked from outside the arc at 2:08 giving the Lobos their largest lead of 15.
Two free throws at the one-second mark by the Tornados' Christopher Poe cut the visitors deficit to nine, 45-36 heading to the break.
Sul Ross dominated the first eight minutes of the second half as a three-pointer by Licon at 12:25 spread the gap 65-41 in favor of the Lobos.
Concordia could pull no closer than 10 and ended the contest with a layup as Sully went on to stake the 84-73 victory.
For the game, Otubu finished with 15 points while
C.J. Ross and
Caleb Thomasson tallied 14 and 13 points respectively. Hollis finished up with 12 points.
Licon led with eight rebounds while
Conner Dawson notched a team-best five assists.
