ALPINE, Texas- University of Mary Hardin-Baylor stalled a late-game Sul Ross rally and defeated the Lobos, 79-78 handing Sully its first home setback Thursday at the Gallego Center.
Trailing by 13 in the last five minutes of the contest, Sul Ross fought its way down to a two-point deficit with a three-point basket by
Tristen Licon with eight seconds left in regulation.
The Crusaders' Demarius Cress converted a free throw with six seconds remaining extending the Cru's lead to three, 79-76.
A three-point foul sent Licon to the stripe with one and a half seconds left on the clock.
The El Paso freshman knocked down two of the three foul shots to pull the home team to within a point. The Crusaders were able to find an open pass off the inbound following Licon's final free throw and held on for the 79-78 victory.
The Lobos took a 12-point lead off a triple by
B.J. Hollis with 12:22 remaining in the first half.
Sully would then go on to hold a pair of 13-point advantages off of back-to-back free throws by Licon and
Stephen Walker at the 11:11 and 9:10 marks.
The visitors battled their way down to a three-point deficit off a Kendal Lytle layup with 1:29 left before the half.
A three-pointer off a fast break by Licon at the :50 second mark sent Sul Ross to the break leading 37-32.
The Lobos struggled to gain momentum early in the second half as Lakendric Hyson scored on a layup capping a 5-0 run and put the Cru ahead, 38-37 with 17:45 left in the game.
Mary Hardin-Baylor never lost the lead although the Lobos threatened with a pair of one-point deficits.
The Cru then mounted a 9-0 run to take a 66-55 lead with 7:12 left in the contest.
A three-pointer by Aubrie King gave UMHB its largest lead of the night, a 13-point, 72-59 advantage with 5:21 remaining.
For the game, Licon and
B.J. Hollis led with 19 points each.
Caleb Thomasson secured 12 points and seven rebounds.
Sully drops to 18-6 and 13-3 while the Cru improves to 17-7 and 10-6 and avenged a 97-95 loss to the Lobos in Belton back on January 27.
Sul Ross will close out the regular season run Saturday against visiting Concordia. Tip off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
Final seedings for next week's ASC Men's Championship tournament in Alpine will be released Saturday night.
