ABILENE- For the second time in the three-year
Clif Carroll era, the Sul Ross State University Lobos are American Southwest Conference West Division Champions.
Sully clinched this year's division title with a 76-57 ASC victory over McMurry University Saturday and earned the right to host the 2017-18 American Southwest Conference Men's Championship Tournament, February 22-24.
Final division seedings will be released next Saturday which marks the final weekend of regular season competition.
Against the War Hawks,
Caleb Thomasson led Lobo scorers with a double double 20 points an 11 rebounds.
A layup by
Stephen Walker started a 9-0 Sul Ross run and ended on a layup by Thomasson for a 32-16 Sul Ross lead at the 7:42 mark, first half.
Gary Ringo, JR's three-pointer at 4:28 extended the Pack's lead to 17 before McMurry closed the gap to 14 off a layup by Mike Williams and trailed 44-30 at intermission.
The War Hawks attacked with a 10-0 run which lasted nearly seven minutes into the second half.
A 5-0 run by the visitors was finished off with a three-point basket by
Tristen Licon and gave Sully a 62-51 lead with 6:20 left in the game.
The Lobos finished off McMurry with an 8-0 run capped with a layup by Walker for the 76-57 win.
Walker provided 19 points while Licon and
B.J. Hollis contributed 12 and 11 points respectively.
The Lobos improve to 18-5 on the season and 13-2 in ASC play. The War Hawks drop to 8-15 and 6-10.
Sul Ross will host the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and Concordia to close out the regular season next Thursday and Saturday.
