SAN ANGELO, Texas- NCAA Division II Angelo State University defeated the Sul Ross Lady Lobo basketball team by a 99-62 count in Sully's season opener Sunday at the Junell Center.
The Belles, ranked No. 24 in the latest CoSida poll, led by only a three-point margin at the end of the first quarter.
A three-pointer by
Chandre Nunez 30 seconds into the contest gave the Lady Lobos a 3-2 lead before Angelo State pounced on a 7-0 run and took a 9-3 advantage with 6:41 remaining in the opening period.
A layup by Nunez capped an 8-2 run for the visitors and tied the outing at 11 at the 3:48 mark.
Nunez banked again from long range at 3:17 for a 14-13 Sul Ross lead.
The Belles responded with a pair of free throws by DeAnira Moore for a 15-14 lead for the home squad.
A jumper in the paint by
Annie Lenoir swung the lead back to the Lady Lobos at 2:25 before Angelo State mounted a 7-0 run for a 22-16 advantage.
Nunez finished off the quarter with a time-expiring three-pointer off an assist by
Jocelyne Roque as Sully trailed 22-19 heading to the second period.
The Lady Lobos never recovered the lead in the second quarter but climbed to within a one-point deficit as
Makayla Hamilton fired off a long range jumper at the 3:58 mark.
Angelo State eventually broke into a double digit lead and went to the half with a 15-point, 45-30 advantage.
Sul Ross was held to eight points in the third quarter but responded with a 24-point outing in the fourth. Angelo State combined for a 54-point attack over the third and fourth quarters for the 99-62 victory.
Nunez registered 29 points and was the leading scorer for either team.
Kaylee Martinez posted 12 points while
Angalyn Latin added 10 in the effort. Martinez also led rebounders with five boards.
The Lady Lobos begin the season at 0-1 and will face University of the Southwest in Hobbs, New Mexico on Monday, November 19.
