HOBBS, New Mexico- The Sul Ross Lady Lobo basketball team overcame a slim halftime deficit to beat University of the Southwest, 64-60, Monday night in Hobbs.
Angalyn Latin led the Lady Lobos with 17 points while
Lizette Heredia supplied 11.
Jocelyne Roque led rebounders with five boards.
Both teams ran neck-and-neck in the first quarter as
Makayla Hamilton converted the second of two free throws to tie the game at six at the 5:36 mark.
A layup by
Kaylee Martinez at 2:24 put Sully on top 11-10 before three lead exchanges followed.
Southwest ended the quarter on a free throw for a 14-12 lead.
The Mustangs put up a seven point lead early in the second quarter and went on a sustained scoring run down the stretch for a 26-15 lead with 3:15 remaining before the half.
Sul Ross battled its way down to a two-point deficit as Latin converted from short range with 37 seconds remaining. Southwest knocked down the final bucket of the period eight seconds later to go to the break with a 29-25 lead.
A layup by
Jazmine Saucedo tied the game at 40 with 2:16 left in the third quarter before the Mustangs broke the tie with a 4-0 run and led 44-40 heading to the fourth.
The Lady Lobos recovered from a seven-point deficit early in the closing period as a free throw by
Jessica Magallanes at 3:27 tied the game at 58.
A driving layup by Latin 20 seconds later broke the knot before Sully ended the contest with a late quarter run for the 64-60 victory.
The Lady Lobos even their season mark at 1-1 while Southwest falls to 2-5.
Sul Ross will visit Trinity University this Friday, November 23. Tip off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
