QUOTES FROM COACH JOHN PEARCE

Opening comments
From the opening kickoff to the final whistle it was not a good night for us.  I told our team after the game that we're not a good football team at this juncture. We know that and the players know that. We are a young team but we allowed things the other night to get a away from us that we shouldn't have. When they returned the opening kickoff down to our five yard line, I knew we were in trouble. Right now we're trying to get back to the basics.  We're trying to establish some productivity and Build on our younger players and then maximize our recruiting efforts in the offseason.

Thoughts on the opening kickoff
That was a big play for them.  We didn't cover the tight end on second down and they scored.

On trying to establish momentum
We start moving the ball then Paul [Rodriguez] gets sacked then we turn the ball over which sets up another short-field situation for Southwestern and they punch it in. When it's a young team your having to work with, it's difficult to build steam and maintain it.

On team effort
I thought the second half was better just like it was the previous week against  Louisiana College.  I told them at halftime that the first half is over. Let's go out in the second half and play and just take it one play at t a time. The defense had a better showing in the second half. We went back to the basics which is what we're trying to do on both sides of the ball.

Thoughts on Paul Rodriguez
He had some easy throws and then we had some wide open receivers and he couldn't get the ball to them.  It wasn't just Paul but our other quarterbacks as well.  We ran a few trick plays and our receivers ran their routes and were wide open. We either over threw them or just were not able to connect.

On the blocked extra points
Fentrese Milligan came off the ball hard and got two blocks. We stress that all the time with our defensive front.  He showed great effort through out the game but it really came through on those two extra point kicks.

On boosting freshmen morale
On Sunday I pulled all the freshmen and sophomores aside  and really stressed to them that they are the future of this team. This is not easy or fun right now but my first  season we ran into a similar situation.  We're taking our bumps and bruises right now but the key is to improve and keep moving forward.
