BROWNWOOD, Texas- Sul Ross State University volleyball delivered a 3-2 ASC defeat to host Howard Payne University Tuesday evening in Brownwood.
Sully's victory against the Yellow Jackets avenges a 3-0 sweep at the hands of Howard Payne last month at the Gallego Center.
The Lady Lobos battled their way to a 25-22 victory in the opening set before falling 25-9 in game two.
Sul Ross turned the tables in game three with a 25-7 victory before falling 25-16 in game four and forcing a fifth and decisive set.
Both teams battled in the closing round but Sully maintained the momentum for a 15-13 edging of the Lady Jackets and the match victory.
In game one, Sul Ross struck the board first with a service ace by Alyssa Lanhan.
The two teams fought through a series of tight margins and ties before a 4-0 Lady Lobo run was capped by a kill by
Priscila Serrano at the 19-16 mark.
An ace by
Annika Canaba put the game at set point before another ace by the Alpine freshman cemented the 25-22 victory.
Sully pounced on a 6-2 run to begin the third game.
Howard Payne never came close as the Lady Lobos surged with a 14-0 run and led 17-4.
An attack error by the Yellow Jackets gave Sully a 24-4 lead at set point.
Sul Ross quickly snuffed a rally by the home team as Canaba's spike nailed down the 25-7 victory heading to game four.
In the fifth and match-deciding set, Howard Payne put up a 4-0 run to lead 6-2.
The visitors would recover from a 10-4 deficit with a 6-0 assault that ended on a kill by
Jordan Scherer to tie the game at 10.
A Howard Payne hitting error gave the Lady Lobos a brief 11-10 advantage before another attack error by the Lady Jackets placed the outing at match point with Sully leading 14-13.
Kylee Davis then set up the match-winning kill for
Isabella Ruiz as Sul Ross claimed the 15-13 win.
For the match, Ruiz posted a double double 16 kills and 10 assists.
Davis added 19 assists while Canaba supplied 13.
Freshman libero
Karigan Edwards led the back line with second season-high of 18 digs. Canaba posted 14 stops while Davis added 10.
Tuesday's victory improves Sul Ross to 4-9 on the season and 3-5 in ASC play. Howard Payne falls to 2-14 and 1-8.
The Lady Lobos will be in action Friday and Saturday with conference matches at Hardin-Simmons and McMurry.
