B.J. Hollis scored a season and career-best 21 points to lead the Sul Ross men's basketball team to an 80-58 stomping of visiting U.T. Tyler at the Gallego Center Saturday.
The sophomore forward knocked down 5-of-11 shots from beyond the arc while shooting 2-for-2 at the free throw line and added three assists and a steal.
The Lobos posted an 8-2 run that was finished off with a floater by
Caleb Thomasson with 16:12 left in the first half.
A three-pointer by
Tristen Licon at the 13:37 mark capped an 8-0 run giving Sully a 16-6 lead.
Hollis then fired off his third converted triple at 13:13 extending the home team's lead to 13.
Another three-pointer by
Jola Otubu, 14 seconds later, put Sul Ross ahead, 25-9 before Hollis connected on a pair of free throws and spread the gap to 18.
Hollis continued his scoring spree with another three-point basket at 10:20 and put Sul Ross ahead by 21, up 35-11.
A layup by
Gary Ringo, JR gave Sully its largest lead of the half, a 24-point, 34-13 advantage with 6:34 remaining before the half.
U.T. Tyler cut their deficit to 20 as Johnell Lane banked on a mid range jumper at 57 seconds as the visitors trailed 45-25 heading to intermission.
Two layups by Licon midway through the second half would give Sully a pair of 25-point leads.
Licon's second layup at the 10:23 mark started a 6-0 run as the El Paso freshman ended the drive with a jumper from the elbow at 9:02.
A Licon steal at 8:07 setup a fast break dunk by Ringo giving the Lobos a 71-40 lead.
Licon then drained a three-pointer giving Sul Ross its largest lead of the game, up 76-43 with 6:13 left in the contest.
The Patriots could pull no closer than 22 as Jamal Gaskin converted the final bucket of the game as the Lobos walked away with the 80-58 victory.
Thomasson and Licon finished with 14 and 13 points while Otubu collected 12 points. Thomasson led the rebounding effort with seven boards.
As a team, the Lobos nailed 9-of-17 shots from outside the arc in the first half at 53 percent.
Saturday's win marks the longest winning streak (nine games) for Sul Ross since the Lobos joined the American Southwest Conference in 1996.
Sully improves to 11-4 and 6-1 in league action while U.T. Tyler drops to 10-4 and 3-4.
The Lobos will look to stretch their current streak to 10 wins next Saturday as Howard Payne University visits the Gallego Center.
Tip off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
