ALPINE, Texas- The Sul Ross State University men's basketball team saddled its 10th consecutive victory as the Lobos defeated visiting Howard Payne in an 84-65 ASC decision Saturday afternoon.
Caleb Thomasson missed a double double by just two rebounds and picked up a team-best 15 points.
Sul Ross finished at 52 percent shooting from the field against the Yellowjackets at 31-of-60 and nailed nearly half its shots from beyond the arc at 8-of-19.
Howard Payne converted the first basket 20 seconds into the opening half as Khyce Randall banked from long range.
Thomasson answered in transition off a layup set up by
Stephen Walker.
Following a free throw by Randall at the 16:41 mark, Sully pounced with an 8-0 run capped by a jumper in the lane by
C.J. Ross at 14:12.
Conner Dawson extended the Lobo lead to 14 at 6:20 with a floater before the visitors worked their deficit down to four off another free throw by Randall with just under 1:30 left before the half.
Tristen Licon closed out the half with a jumper finishing off a 7-0 Sul Ross run and gave the home team a 37-26 advantage heading to the break.
A three-pointer by Ross completed a 5-0 Lobo run and put Sully ahead, 53-37 with 13:54 left in the second half.
Licon then fired off a converted three-pointer at 11:19 giving Sul Ross its largest lead of 19.
The Lobos never lost command allowing the Yellowjackets to slip to within 13.
Aaron Anderson's layup with eight seconds remaining finished off a 5-0 run as the Lobos coasted to the 84-65 win.
Stephen Walker tallied 14 points against Howard Payne while
B.J. Hollis and
Brock Anders posted 10 points each.
Thomasson led with five assists.
Sul Ross bumps its mark to 12-4 on the season including a 7-1 mark in ASC competition. Howard Payne falls to 7-9 and 3-5.
The Lobos will host the McMurry University War Hawks at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
