ALPINE, Texas- The Sul Ross men's basketball team fought off a resilient first half effort by University of the Ozarks and went on to claim a 76-63 ASC victory over the Eagles in Thursday night action at the Gallego Center.
Thursday's win marks the longest winning streak (eight games) for Sul Ross since the Lobos entered the American Southwest Conference in 1996.
Caleb Thomasson and
C.J. Ross led Lobo scorers with 13 points each. Thomasson also notched three assists and two steals.
Stephen Walker drained a three-point basket 32 seconds into the game before a scoreless three-minute stretch.
A jumper by Ozarks' Skylar Barnes at the 15:30 first half mark pulled the Eagles to within one, trailing 3-2.
The Lobos picked up momentum with an 8-0 run capped by a free throw by
C.J. Ross to give the home squad a 13-4 lead with 11:44 remaining in the first half.
Jola Otubu posted a finger roll at 5:09 for a 30-17 Sul Ross lead before the Eagles used a 12-0 run to slice their deficit down to one with 51 seconds left in the half.
Ross scored the final Lobo bucket at 25 seconds before the Eagles Joey Hall nailed a three-pointer with four seconds left to tie the game at 32 heading to the break.
Ozarks held a slim lead for the first four minutes of the second half before
Tristen Licon's three-pointer knotted the game at 42.
A layup by Ross at 11:37 gave Sul Ross a 51-50 go ahead as three lead exchanges would follow.
Thomasson's baby hook at 6:35 started an 8-0 Lobo run.
Thomasson ended the drive with a free throw giving Sul Ross a 66-57 advantage with 4:26 left in the contest.
Sully then broke into a double digit lead as Licon converted a free throw at 36 seconds.
A fast break dunk by Ross with 12 remaining sealed a 4-0 run as the Lobos went on to take the 76-63 victory.
B.J. Hollis finished with 12 points on the night while Licon and Otubu totaled 11 and 10 points respectively.
Sul Ross improves to 10-4 on the season and 4-1 in conference competition. Ozarks falls to 3-9 and 1-4.
The Lobos will tangle with the Patriots of U.T. Tyler this Saturday in the second game of a five-game home stretch.
Tip off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the Gallego Center.
