Licon buzzer beater lifts Pack over UMHB, 97-95

BELTON- Tristen Licon nailed a game-winning three-pointer lifting Sul Ross to a thrilling 97-95 ASC victory over University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday in Belton.
 
Licon's shot flew as time expired improving the Lobos' season mark to 15-5 including a 10-2 record in conference competition. The Crusaders fall to 14-6 and 7-5.
 
A jumper by B.J. Hollis with seven seconds remaining pulled Sully to within one, trailing 95-94.
 
With three seconds left in the contest, Jola Otubu grabbed a defensive rebound off a missed UMHB free throw. Otubu then passed the ball to Licon who then fired off the game-winning shot just short of the mid court stripe.
 
Both teams exchanged leads over the first seven minutes of play.
 
A free throw by Stephen Walker capped a 6-0 Sul Ross run giving the visitors a 21-14 lead at the 10:16 mark, first half.
 
The Crusaders fought their way down to five, one-point deficits and took the lead at 3:38 with a jumper by Lakendric Hyson.
 
Two foul shots by UMHB's Aubrie King in the closing seconds gave Mary Hardin-Baylor a 46-44 lead heading to intermission.
 
A jumper by Caleb Thomasson tied the game at 46 with 19:13 left in the second half.
 
Walker's jumper at 18:44 broke the tie and started an 8-0 Sul Ross run.
 
Gary Ringo, JR's dunk with 11:48 remaining gave the visitors their largest lead of the game, a 14-point, 67-53 advantage.
 
The Crusaders narrowed their deficit down to one over the next six-minute stretch and took the lead at 6:11 with a three-pointer by Demarius Cress.
 
The lead would trade sides over the next three minutes of play before a three-pointer by the Cru's Shaq Martin put the home squad ahead by four at the 33 second mark.
 
Cress banked on two free throws with 22 seconds remaining giving UMHB a 95-92 lead before Hollis' bucket 15 seconds later.
 
Cress then missed two critical foul shots at three seconds as Otobu's rebound set up the pass to Licon for the time-expiring shot.
 
 Walker finished with a season and career-best 31 points and added 12 rebounds for a double double.
 
Thomasson also finished with a double double 16 points and 11 boards while Licon and Otubu notched 12 and 11 points respectively. Ringo also finished with 10 points in Saturday's win.
 
As a team, Sully shot an impressive 56 percent from the field at 40-of-71 and banked on 9-of-22 from the beyond the arc.
 
With Saturday's victory, Sul Ross maintains a three-game lead over Concordia and UMHB in the ASC West Division. The Tornados fell, 93-84 Saturday against visiting Howard Payne.
 
The Lobos will face the Yellow Jackets in Brownwood next Saturday in a 4:00 p.m. conference tip.
