SHERMAN- Following a 3-1 setback to Lawrence University (1-1), Sul Ross Volleyball (1-1) defeated Paul Quinn College (0-2) in a 3-0 shutout during opening round action of the Austin College Classic Friday in Sherman.
The Lady Lobos will take on Centenary College at 10 a.m. Saturday before closing out the weekend against Austin College at 2 p.m.
In Friday's opening round, Lawrence posted a 25-17 opening-set victory before Sul Ross countered with a 25-23 win in game two. Lawrence secured 25-14 and 25-10 wins in the final two sets to claim the match victory.
The Lady Lobos scored the first three points in the second set which was initiated by a kill from
Autumn Kilpatrick (Sterling City/SCHS). Freshman setter
Mirella Thomas (San Antonio/Stevens) capped the 3-0 run with an ace before an attack error by Sul Ross pulled the opposition to within two.
Lawrence commenced on a 3-0 run of their own before a kill by
Jordan Scherer (Round Rock/Cedar Ridge) finished off another 3-0 sprint giving Sully a 6-3 advantage.
Four points later, an ace by
Alyssa Lanahan (El Paso/Bel Air) put the Lady Lobos ahead, 9-4.
The Vikings tied the set at 14 off a Sul Ross attack error before a kill by
Priscila Serrano (Marfa/MHS) broke the knot.
Following a one-point lead by Lawrence, the Lady Lobos mounted another 3-0 run taking advantage of Viking offensive miscues.
Sul Ross ended the set with a kill by senior
Emily Campos (San Angelo/TLCA) and a pair of service aces by
Stephanie Diaz (El Paso/El Dorado).
Alie Muldrow (Crosby/CHS) led the charge with six kills while Thomas supplied 14 assists. Senior libero
McKenna Thomas (Odessa/Permian) tallied 14 digs in the effort.
In the nightcap against Paul Quinn, Muldrow and
Isabella Ruiz (Fabens/FHS) recorded eight kills each with setter Thomas adding 17 assists.
McKenna Thomas notched 11 scoops.
Sul Ross dominated from the opening game and pounded out a 10-1 scoring drive for a 25-8 victory before cruising to 25-13 and 25-19 victories in sets two and three.
