ALPINE, Texas- Less than two-and-a-half seasons into his Sul Ross career,
Caleb Thomasson entered Saturday's ASC bout against visiting LeTourneau just 18 points shy of the 1,000-career point mark.
The senior forward did not disappoint and scored a team-best 21 points to lead the Lobos to a 92-82 victory over the Yellow Jackets.
Thomasson joins five other Lobos who accomplished the feat since Sul Ross joined the NCAA Division III ranks in 1996.
Sidney Hooper currently sits as the all-time leading scorer with 1,725 career points (16.1 ppg). Brandon Harvey is second with 1,319 (18.5 ppg). 2018 Hall of Honor inductee Larry Morales is third at 1,287 (12.4 ppg) while Jorge Quintero (12.9 ppg) and Jimmie Martinez (11.0 ppg) rank fourth and fifth with 1082 and 1073 career points. Thomasson is sixth at 1003 (16.9 ppg).
The Ackerly native also reached the 500-career rebound mark in Saturday's victory with seven boards.
Rockland Owens holds the Sul Ross record in career rebounds with 783 (7.3 rpg). Thomasson sits in second at 506 (8.6 rpg) while Filiberto Torres (5.8 rpg), Brandon Harvey (5.6 rpg) and Percy Settle (7.5 rpg) rank third, fourth and fifth with 422, 401 and 375 career boards.
A three-pointer by
B.J. Hollis gave Sully a brief 7-6 lead with 18:17 left in the opening half.
Two more lead exchanges would follow before back-to-back jumpers by Thomasson pushed the home team ahead by a slim 11-8 margin.
Hollis fired off another long range jumper that ended a 10-0 Lobo run and extended Sully's lead, 27-10 at 9:41.
Sul Ross would go on to sport three, 15-point leads down the stretch before
Tristen Licon's three-pointer gave the home squad its largest lead of 16 at 4:23.
LeTourneau could pull no closer than nine and ended the half on two free throws by Caleb Loggins that narrowed the Lobo advantage, 49-37.
Sully held a double digit lead for a majority of the second half.
Conner Dawson connected from outside the arc at the 10:53 mark ending a 10-0 Lobo run.
Gary Ringo, JR then found pay dirt with a long range basket on the next possession and spread the gap, 72-51 at 9:58.
The Jackets squeezed their deficit down to eight as Seth Mattson converted an old school, three-point play at 1:49.
Two free throws by Alec Colhoff at 24 seconds trimmed the Lobo lead to six before a pair of foul shots by Thomasson and a layup by Licon paved the way for the 92-82 Sul Ross win.
Hollis and Licon finished with 19 and 17 points respectively while Ringo tallied 11 points.
The Lobos hit 32-of-62 shots from the field at a season-high 52 percent including 11-of-27 shooting from beyond the arc.
With the win, Sul Ross improves to 3-4 on the season and bumps its ASC mark to 1-1. LeTourneau falls to 6-2 and suffered its first conference setback at 3-1.
Sully will entertain East Texas Baptist in a 7:30 nightcap Monday.
