ALPINE, Texas- Sul Ross men's basketball held off a resilient second half effort by East Texas Baptist and claimed a late-game, 75-70 victory over the visiting Tigers Monday night.
With Monday's win, Sully evens its season record to 4-4 while bumping its ASC mark to 2-1. The Tigers suffered just their second loss of the season at 3-2 and their first league setback at 2-1. Both of ETBU's losses have come at the hands of the Lobos.
Sul Ross defeated the Tigers in an 82-80 non-conference shootout in Marshall on November 17.
Freshman guard
Tristen Licon led the charge with a season-best 18 points and secured his third straight double figure performance in Monday's game.
The Lobos broke a 3-3 tie and mounted a 7-0 run capped by a floater by
Caleb Thomasson with 14:00 left in the first half.
East Texas Baptist then assembled a 6-0 run finished off with a scoop shot by Alan Wilkinson to tie the contest at 19 at the 8:36 mark.
One more tie would follow with a layup by the Tigers' Robby Dooley which knotted the game at 21 at 7:41.
A three-point basket by
Jola Otubu broke the tie and started a 9-0 Sul Ross attack culminating in a layup by Thomasson at 3:18.
The Tigers battled their way down to a pair of four-point deficits and ended the half on a free throw by Jordan Gosey with ETBU trailing 32-29 at the break.
East Texas Baptist tied the game at 34 off a three-pointer by Westin Riddick two minutes into the second half.
The Tigers then snapped the tie with a dunk by Wilkinson at 17:03.
The visitors would then hold a narrow lead for the next four-and-a-half minutes before a jumper in the lane by Thomasson tied the outing at 46.
The teams would swap leads down the stretch of the half before a three-point bucket by Licon at 1:23 gave Sully a 69-68 advantage.
The Lobos would hold on to the lead for good although ETBU crept to within two off a layup by Gosey at 27 seconds.
A dunk by
Conner Dawson six seconds later gave Sul Ross a 74-70 cushion before Dawson put the Tigers away with a free throw in the final 10 seconds of regulation.
Thomasson finished up with 17 points was just one rebound short of collecting his fourth double double of the season.
B.J. Hollis posted 12 points in the victory.
Sul Ross will make its longest road trip of the season this Thursday and Saturday. Sully will face Louisiana College in a December 14 rematch in Alexandria. The Lobos defeated the Wildcats, 77-60 in the non-conference, season opener November 16 in Marshall.
The Lobos will then trek eastward to take on Belhaven University on Saturday in Jackson, Mississippi.
