Thomasson posts 33 points as Sully beats Blazers, 93-83

JACKSON, Mississippi- Senior forward Caleb Thomasson posted a season-high 33 points and totaled 13 rebounds to lead Sul Ross to a 93-83 victory over Belhaven Saturday.

Thomasson secured his fourth double double of the season and was just four points away from tying his career best in total points in a game.

The Lobos held a slim lead through the first five minutes of the opening half.

Gary Ringo, JR's three-point bucket summed up a 9-0 Sul Ross run for a 17-6 lead with 13:22 remaining in the first half.

The Blazers pulled to within seven at 11:53 off of two free throws by Joshua Roberts.

A layup by Thomasson at the 9:41 mark gave Sully its largest lead of the half, a 13-point, 25-12 advantage.

Belhaven took the next seven minutes to narrow the gap and took the lead at 2:14 with a three-pointer by Jonathan Durham.

Following a 37-37 tie, the Blazers' Justin Jones cleared three foul shots with just under a minute left to put the home team up for the remainder of the half.

A dunk by Tommy McCoy at 17 seconds and a free throw by Gian Van Heerigen sent the Blazers to the break leading 43-39.

Thomasson opened the second half with a turnaround jumper to pull the Lobos to within two.

A layup by Thomasson at 17:08 gave Sully the go ahead leading 47-46.

Thomasson converted another layup at 13:22 and finished up an 8-0 Lobo run for a 59-48 lead for the visitors.

Sul Ross would go on to hold two more 11-point leads off of two paint shots by Thomasson before Belhaven worked its way down to a four-point deficit with a 7-0 run.

The Blazers crept back to within four as Brent Webber's three-point basket at 6:26 narrowed the score to a 72-48 margin.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Webber tied the game at 76 with 4:37 remaining in the second half.

Two free throws by C.J. Ross began an 8-0 Sul Ross run that was capped by a three-point shot by B.J. Hollis at 2:19.

The Blazers could pull no closer than a six point deficit as Sul Ross put Belhaven away with foul shots by Jola Otubu, Stephen Walker and Conner Dawson in the final 60 seconds of the game.

Dawson and Walker tallied 14 and 11 points while Ross collected a team-best six assists.

Sul Ross finished with its best shooting performance of the year at 57 percent or 34-of-60.

Saturday's win in Jackson marks the second consecutive game Sully has finished above the 50 percent mark in shooting and third for the season.

The Lobos improve to 6-4 on the season, 4-1 in conference play. Belhaven falls to 2-6 and 1-3.

Sully will take on Schreiner and Texas Lutheran in a pair of non-conference games December 19 and 20 in Seguin.
